I don't trust either side in this to be honest. What's to stop the current Ukrainian govt from planting a bunch of fake ballots to undermine a vote they don't want to happen?

The corruption caused in the Ukrainian gov't was caused by Russian puppets. We will know how things can change after their elections this month
