The newer Saturday Night Live episodes are absolutely horrible

It's embarrassing to watch these idiots fail so bad at being funny.

Is it the writing or the actors?

Girl from my HS is on now. She isnt funny at all.

I think the ratio of hits to misses is about the same as it's always been, and like usual, depends on the host.
Andrew Garfield sucks, but the talent on the show was still able to turn chicken shite into chicken salad and turn in a decent effort.
This cast, as usual, is better than people are willing to give credit for.

Both.
I mean, maybe it is all on the writing. No one can deliver this material in a way that is good.
The only segment on the newer episodes that is somewhat funny is Keenan spoofing Sharpton and Politics Nation on MSNBC.

New writers and cast. SNL cleaned house in the writing room. Gonna take a little bit to find their rhythm.
And the hosts these days are terrible. There are no truly good comedians out there that the public knows about.
No Steve Martins.

There are recognizable comedians they've had host, but they're different in style than someone like Steve Martin.
The best current host is Justin Timberlake. And I don't think that's debateable.

I disagree. Of the episodes I've seen this year I feel like they are missing way more often right now.
This is mainly due to the Weekend Update segment being god awful right now. It's always their longest bit but right now it isn't even coming close to justifying the amount of time it receives. Weekend Update hasn't been this bad since Colin Quinn was stammering horribly through his cue cards.
IMO WU is the backbone of the show and when it's anchors are hitting the show around it does better. When it sucks the entire show suffers b/c there is a massive dead break in the middle that sucks all the laughs away. It's nearly impossible to get your momentum back from a terrible Weekend Update.

It is pretty bad right now. The new guy is improving, but he's got a lot of work to do.
WU is really a lot tougher to do now than it used to be, because there are so many knockoffs on the air 4 or 5 days a week. In that sense, it makes it even more imperative they step up their game.
And I think last week they gave them 20 minutes because they didn't know what to do with the host.

Just don't understand how they write this stuff down and read it out, and not realize that it just simply isn't funny.

It could be written funny as hell, but if the delivery is off, dead joke right there.

The little Jewish kid character is funny.

Outside of Weekend Update (which is the worst I can remember it ever being and I hate Amy Poehler)), this cast isn't much worse than any other over the last 10 years. The writing has certainly gone downhill. I feel like Jay Pharoe could be an Eddie Murphy coming out of this cast. He's gold in every sketch he's in (him as Barack Obama, "What Does My Girl Say?", "Black History Month", Attention Teachers and Students, ect
When this cast hits, they hit big. When they miss, they miss big. There are very few "average" sketches, just awful and awesome. I find that most of their best work is in their pre-recorded digital shorts. "The Bey-gency" was a funny recent one. I think that if they find a better cast member to do weekend update and get a little more consistent with their writing, this cast has some serious talent. Jay, Jimmy the Overly Touchy Orderly, the AT&T guy, the fat one, the new black chick, and Jewfro are all really solid and could have bright futures.

I used to actively loathe Vanessa Bayer, but in my old age I've grown to merely despise her...that jewish kid makes my skin crawl. But I will admit, she's as stoic as Jack Webb compared to Aidy Bryant's mugging at the camera.

She was a few years older than me, and I have no recollection of her at all. Had to look her up in an old year book. She must have been a huge loser in HS.

Guys Dance Party with Bruce Willis was good.
