Is this a new thing? Or do I just eat at poor restaurants as I have never had this before?

I've only booked through Opentable and no CC required.

I had to do this for a big group at Rock N Sake. Ended up having to cancel the card when they were giant pricks and we decided to eat elsewhere. Not a fan of that policy.

It's normal for nicer restaurants for a large party. How big is your party?

How big is your party? The LRG restaurants ask for a credit card to hold tables for large parties at other spots. Especially around graduation time/special events.

How many people ? I've never had that happen in the 3 times I've made reservations there.

Should have worked the free bottle of wine and next meal paid for approach.

What did they do? They charged you for not eating there?

It is 8 people for graduation weekend. I didnt care. I was just wondering if that is common. I regularly make reservations for 6-10 but Mr. Johns is about as expensive as we normally get and I didnt find Peche's menu any more expensive. I was just stoked to get a graduation reservation this late in the game!!

Its just the size of your group and the combination of it coinciding with graduation weekend. Common practice across the industry. Protects restaurant from a huge no show

I'm sure this is a big table policy. Graduation weekend may be a factor too.

I hope they aren't considering this policy full time.

Yes, and I think most people should understand why this practice is used. Most places will allow exceptions to the charge for unforeseen circumstances that may arise.

I was really just curious. I am most excited to get the reservation on short notice.

I doubt they'll do this for a two top on a Wednesday. A two or 4 top not showing up isnt much of an issue, but a larger group can really crush a restaurant's night.

Tried to. I made a thread about it, absolutely awful experience and I hope that place goes out of business.

We went there for my gf's bday. I made a reservation for a large group 3 days ago. Get there tonight, and we have 10 of our party when we get there. The hostess tells me they can seat us when our entire party is there. Our group was 20, so I understood not sitting only half the party, it is business after all. 4 more of our group show, and I ask if we can be seated so we can start ordering drinks and apps. The hostess says the manager does not allow that, so I ask to speak with him. At this point I was still calm.

The manager comes up and immediately acts like a-hole, which of course angers me. I ask why we can't be seated when more than half the party is here (my mom who has had 2 back surgeries was with us). We go back and forth for a bit, and he was incredibly rude from the get go.

When I made the reservation, I had to provide a credit card in case only half showed up. The manager still was going to charge me $50, to which I politely told him he can f himself. We decided to take our business elsewhere, and I canceled my card so he couldn't charge me.

Would've done the same. That's pretty bad.
