Anyone been?

They've recently opened and have only a 42% rating on Urbanspoon.

Predictions as to how long it will last?

Friends who have gone have said it's awesome. Like you said, it's pretty new, so you have to wait a while to see how the rating goes.

We had a pretty good thread on it last week if you want to look for it. Seems to have been a mixed opinion on the viability of the business model. Going to depend on the foodie tourist who would travel in for something like that and not just locals.

To be fair they've seated like 100-200 guests total so far? And that rating is based off 7 contributors (none of which left a full review?).....

I've heard really good from the 2 folks I know that went.

My friend went. Said it was truly stunning, and he's pretty hard to please.

He did say he dropped closed to 500.

I still have yet to try Square Root, but it's on my bucket list. One thing I've noticed during the short time that they've been open is that their seating and menu has already evolved. I believe when they opened, they had two servings a night for all sixteen stools at the same time. Perhaps this was overbearing on the kitchen, or they found that folks simply didn't want to come in at just two set times. Shortly after they opened, they began taking reservations every fifteen minutes.

The most recent change according to open table (I noticed in just the past few days) is that Tues-Thurs is now only an 8-9 course for $95, rather than the 12-15 course meal for $150, which is still offered on the weekend. Perhaps they outpriced their guests or maybe 15 courses was simply overkill. I was looking to try the entire 15 course experience during the week, but those days are now gone.

Conflicting messages on open table...the updated version:

quote:

Please note that Square Root requires a credit card to hold the reservation. Your credit card will be charged the day of your reservation. We offer an 8-9 course tasting on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for $95 per person and a 12-15 course tasting on Friday & Saturday for $150 per person, INCLUSIVE of tax and service charge. Beverages are not included and will be billed the night you dine. Cancellations within 72 hours of your reservation will be charged the full tasting menu price.
...and the old one...
quote:

Please note that Square Root requires a credit card to hold the reservation. Your credit card will be charged 72 hours prior to your reservation. The total price of the experience includes: Dinner $115.61 + Tax $11.27 + Service Charge $23.12 = $150 per person. Beverages are not included and will be billed the night you dine. Cancellations within 72 hours of your reservation will be charged the full amount of $150 per person. Additionally, we require at least 48 hours notice of any allergies.

Are they evolving in a smart way or are they beginning to crumble already, with their original concept not taking hold very well?

I like the chef's tastings, so I'd love to see them succeed, but it seems like they're pushing the panic button very early and breaking away from their original concept. Plenty of reservations abound.

Anyone been yet? I find it hard to believe that with all the OT Ballers that no one has tried it yet.

That was smart to offer a less expensive option. Frankly I have no desire to eat a 15-course meal regardless of quality or price.

I've had a few people commenting about their urban spoon rating as well. Too much stock is put into those ratings. I wish they could show who actually has service industry experience when they do a rating.
