Is the Matherne's supermarket on Highland Road having issues?

Their inventory is sparse. Some shelves are almost empty. Their frozen food cases look bare much of the time. Their fresh produce and fruit area looks neglected.

I know Matherne's is opening a store in downtown Baton Rouge. Are they in the process of closing the Highland Road store in order to stock the downtown store?

I have no idea how the one on Perkins/Bluebonnet is still open.

I go there probably once a month. Never anyone in there. Produce often looks rough.

Uhhhh.. they better not. It's my most frequented grocery store.

I have noticed they stopped caring about the beer. They used to have a ton of craft beer (and they still have plenty), and they'd rotate it all the time. There was a guy who seemed really into it.

I haven't seen him in a long time, and they haven't restocked the beer at all. I don't know if it just wasn't selling enough so they stopped trying to rotate it or what.

My brother's roommate is a manager. I want to ask him now.

If its a recent thing (as in the last 8-10 days), I heard that one of the major food suppliers/distributors had shut down due to severe damage at their distribution center from the storms last week.

Nah. You might be talking about the guy in the beer/wine department.. who I haven't seen in a while.

Side note: I did the Thursday night wine dinner once and loved it. Would love to do it again.

I have a hard time believing this. I shop there 3-4 times a week and that place it almost always busy.

Same, from 2000 to 2004. The Sunday steak specials were legit.

I lived on N. Rothmer in the subdivision directly behind it and the Dollar General.

I hope not, too. I like going there if I only need a couple of items. They are very good about opening a new checkout register if more than two people are in any line.

I pulled an employee off to the side on Saturday and asked him what's going on with the bare shelves and he mostly avoided answering. He said something about evaluating what inventory moves quickly and just carrying that stuff in stock and not carrying other items that don't move as fast.

He looked like he knew more but didn't want to discuss it.

Thanks but I first noticed the empty shelves about a month or so ago. I just thought it might be a temp thing involving taking inventory so they let it run down for a few days. But it hasn't gotten better.

Now it seems like every time I go there there is at least one item on my list that they either don't carry any more or it's not on the shelf.

Why go there at all if that is true?

I have to agree Matherne's doesn't carry a lot of normal stuff you should be able to find in a grocery store. Their bread department completely sucks.

I go there most often because they're so close and wayyyyyyy better than the Winn Dixie/WalMart on Highland/Lee (and Burbank), but if I am cooking a full meal, they usually can't be my only stop.

Our usual pattern for a good meal is Fresh Market for the meat and special ingredients, Southside for the produce, Mathernes for the packaged stuff.

Usually shop at Target. Everyone now and then they don't carry something that Matherne's has. Generally, spices. Target's spice selection is a joke, while Matherne's has a good one.

I actually like their bread department. Their onion rolls are very good as is their other bread. Not sure what completely sucks about it. They have pistolets, french bread, hamburger buns, wheat options and even chibata bread now in addition to the standard bread isle.

Their beer section has not been as active as before but they did just have a really big sale on the individual bottles that had been sitting there for a while.

They have also started selling sushi at mathernes that has been doing really well.

I find Calandros, Fresh Market, even Winn Dixie to be much better.

Might just be that particular location of Mathernes and how they bread section is set up..
