That is great and all, I max out my IRA every year too.
The problem is, what are we going to do when we are 65 and a gallon of gas costs $1000.
It's all relative. People who are retirement age now are learning this now...

I mean, his wife was a corporate lawyer, and they bought their house with cash at the bottom of the market. I think if I had a spouse pulling in high 6 figures on top of my salary for 10 years, I could probably save up a lot as well.

Yea, I prefer the balance we've struck of spending now AND saving for later. It's not a plan that allows me to retire in my thirties, but considering I am going to live to 120, retiring at 65 isn't so bad.
eta: And God bless the angel he married that allows him to retire while she continues working.

Well, that is an arbitrary number I just pulled out of my arse.
The point is, I know someone who retired 4 years ago who just recently said to me, "I never thought it would cost $100 to fill up my tank."
Now think about the cost of a gallon of milk, a pound of beef, etc., etc., etc... The rapid inflation of the last decade has eaten a lot of the interest earned over the last 40 years.
This is basically the foundation of the conspiracy for Obama and the powers that be to makes us all equal by making us all poor.

I look at credit apps all day long. I've run into two instances of a 22 year old and a 25 year old both being "retired". One won the lottery, 10k a month (net) for life. The other was a trust fund (8500 a month).
I couldn't imagine not doing anything with my life.
