Stupid hipster 80s fetishism notwithstanding, cassette tapes don't get much love. That's a shame, because magnetic tape is still a surprisingly robust way to back up data. Especially now: Sony just unveiled tape that holds a whopping 148 GB per square inch, meaning a cassette could hold 185 TB of data. Prepare for the mixtape to end all mixtapes.

Sony's technique, which will be discussed at today's International Magnetics Conference in Dresden, uses a vacuum-forming technique called sputter deposition to create a layer of magnetic crystals by shooting argon ions at a polymer film substrate. The crystals, measuring just 7.7 nanometers on average, pack together more densely than any other previous method.

Can't even get my head around 3,700 blu-ray's worth of data.

I'm almost positive I used this exact tape cassette to make a mixed tape for my GF in about 1985. Back then if you put some Chicago and Journey together on a cassette tape and then gave it to a girl , you were gonna get laid.

This is just terrific, exactly what Sony needs to do is to R&D a cassette tape to bring back.

The 1998 Windstar that my parents have will be thrilled to know that cassettes are making a comeback.

Yea, that's what I was thinking they were going to say was the method?

Used to own one of those. Saved my wife and youngest daughters life when they were totalled by a semi-truck. Daughter was 3 years old.

Very safe vehicle at the time. and yeah we rocked some cassette tapes!

GTFO with this weak cassette shite.

My first car was a 1975 Cutlass Supreme with an 8-track tape player. Panties were dropping 3 counties over.

They have plans for an 8 track that holds up to 7500 Blurays of data but I can't find the link.
