You only come out the deep end rich if the metal you trade for still has value. How many pieces of silver or gold will you trade for a can of pork and beans if you are starving?

You obviously didn't understand my point.

I didn't say to sell things you needed for gold/silver.

I said that if you really wanted to prepare for the end, buy supplies and equipment (a hand powered flour mill+parts is a great example of things overlooked in doomsday scenarios), so that you actually have a surplus of supplies.

Use it to fleece precious metal carriers, and reap rewards after the economy reestablishes.

If folks are really desperate to part with an oz of gold for an 100 bullets, hell yeah I would oblige them.

I wouldn't if I only had a couple hundred bullets of course, but that's the whole point.

What's both cheaper now and more useful and versatile in a crisis: Gold or bullets.

You don't need to his hoard gold and silver in preparation for an economic meltdown.

The hoarders are going that for you.

I get your point but I think the one you are missing is this, if you are out of ammo I am taking your gold and keeping my ammo. With no law and order the middle ages will seem like a utopia. The strong and well prepared will just take what they wish and the weak will just perish. Anyway this post apocolyptic shite is nonsense anyway for the foreseeable future. Buy and hold what you like just remember you will pay way more per ounce for 100 gram combibars than 10+ once bars per ounce, you will sell for less also.

1) Don't trade if that is a reasonable possibility.

2) You are wayyyyyyyyyyyy overstating what such a scenario would be like, as if you will be incessantly besieged every single day.

Or not understanding how fricking bad the Middle Ages were.

It will be a hell of a lot closer to the American West than the Middle Ages after the first year of collapse.

At least we agree here.

Better off not getting gold anyway. Silver is much better for these purposes.

We agree again. I buy silver to hold monthly, rarely mess with gold however,I believe you can by silver at todays price and will live long enough to see it double at some point perhaps more than once. I cannot fathom gold ever reaching 2500.00$+ an ounce. If it were to approach that soooo much would be melted and hit the market that I do not think the price could hold. This is my opinion only and not financial advice.

The answer is bullets. But I'm not sure why are you asking because this is obvious.
