1 gram silver is expensive

Why are 1 gram silver bars/coins so damn expensive. They are like double the regular price of silver. I don't get it.

Because when the shite hits the fan and you actually have to use them, you'll have reasonable/negotiable denominations to buy the proverbial "bread and milk". Smaller is better in that regard, and you're paying for the immediate buying power.

Imagine going to Rouses with a 100 oz. Engelhard?

Buy US 90% Silver Coinage. Pre 1965.

WIN

Even idiots can recognize a dime or quarter or half dollar if it ever comes time to have to use them to actually purchase goods.

I will never understand this. You think if SHTF the grocery and mall are going to have a weight and measure scale where the credit card machine uses to be?

Guns ammo and stored food will be all that matter till a new government is formed and a new currency is created.

Also... I dont think this will happen.

Could you please describe what it will be like if that happens? Thanks.

History always repeats itself, even if bankers deny this reality. When? That is the question though. Could be tomorrow, could be a thousand years from now.

there will still be bartering, and precious metals will retain some value. but its not like the qwik-e-mart is going to have slushies.

You will have to barter with farmers or other good producers. They are going to want something of value, and precious metals are about the best you can come up with. Ammo would be a good alternative, but its heavy and its not worth **that** much.

The ultimate would be cigs. And diet coke.

But this isn't going to happen anytime soon, and if it does we will have plenty of clues. It could have happened in 2008, but we dodged that one with a hearty gov't response. I don't see them failing to do it again, if the need arrives.

Ok back to the op's question. For the same reason that coke, doritoes and anything else cost more per volume in smaller quantities, production, packaging, and marketing cost are higher on a per unit ratio the smaller unit you buy. The doomsday wacko's think they can buy supplies after armagedon with small amounts but have not thought it through very well. NO ONE is going to give up what they need to survive in a end of the world as we know it situation for a piece of metal.
If this is why you are planning to buy silver you would be much better off stockpiling ammo, guns, and non-perishable food items.

Bingo

Guns and ammo will be sooooooooo much more valuable that any precious metal...and I'm a physical silver owner. If shite really hit the fan, I won't be trading 100 bullets for an ounce of gold.

Ive been thinking of picking up some Eagles....

But I have been leery of people thinking that the listed demonination is the fair value of the coin.

$20 dollars for currency labelled as one dollar.

Seems to me that will be the smart move if you weren't compromising yourself in doing so.

Come out of the deep end rich.

You only come out the deep end rich if the metal you trade for still has value. How many pieces of silver or gold will you trade for a can of pork and beans if you are starving?
I also buy and hold some physical silver and have for over 20 years. I did however unload most of my holdings in the last 24 months. Bought most under 5$ an ounce sold at 45$. This is why you invest in metals if you have the time money and patience, not because the world is coming to an end. It is just like anything else, buy low sell high. Just remember entirely different forces drive the metal market than the stock market and they are much harder to predict on a daily basis. Trying to daytrade metals has lost many a man his fortune and I would not advise it to anyone.

Will the Gap and Chik-Fil-A take this smaller coinage too? This will be good for me to know when "SHTF."
