Would like to make a road trip to Florida this summer and go to universal for a day or two. I would rather stay on the beach in the tampa area or atlantic side though. Suggestions for which is better?

Royal Pacific, you get to skip all the lines at Universal, and it has a beach

daytona to orlando is not a bad drive...clearwater to orlando is a worse drive in my opinion...

Skip Orlando/Universal entirely and stay at a beachfront place at New Smyrna instead.

What is special about New Smyrna?

Is traffic in Orlando bad? Universal is on the south west side of the city so coming from daytona seemingly would be worse.

Is this a family trip? Are you looking for somewhere quiet or somewhere to party?

Staying around Cocoa would be the quickest/easiest commute to Universal but the gulf beaches are nicer IMO.

Just the wife and I. Somewhere quiet like 30A, if that exists around there.

I'd look around the Cocoa, Canaveral, Melbourne area. Decent beaches, not too crowded, and pretty much a straight shot down the Beeline to Universal.

eta. If you don't mind a longer drive, more traffic I'd look at Clearwater, St. Pete.
It's about an hour from Cocoa to Universal, probably 1:30 to 2 hours from clearwater depending on traffic.

Good place for a day or two of relaxing on the beach. Beats the hell out of Orlando and Daytona.

No, you don't want to stay at the beach and go to Universal. You want to stay at Universal and drive to the beach for a day. Utilize your time to the fullest at Universal. Stay at one of the 3 on site hotels and you get the Express Pass that is unlimited in the number of times you can do a ride. When you're tired of park, hit City Walk for the restaurants, bars, shops, etc. If you end up around Tampa, hit Busch Gardens for a day for the best roller coasters in Florida.
