I just arrived for my layover, am I suppose to get my luggage and recheck it or do they automatically transfer it?

It should be transferred. This is where luggage is usually lost though.

what do your luggage claim checks say? Where did you tell them to send your bags when you checked in for original flight??
If clearing customs on this layover-yes, you will have to get bags and clear customs, then give the bags back to the carrier to hopefully get them to your final destination.

Is it the same airline or different airlines? It should be transferred, but check your baggage claim check & see if it has a destination airport code on it.

Baggage claim has Pittsburgh on it.

You're good to go unless it's a screw up on their part.

First time ever having to stop in another city. I normally go straight to Atlanta when I fly.

as long as your connecting flight is on the same airline (or a partner of theirs), you are fine...just pick it up at the final destination...
I have only had one time where I screwed up and unknowing booked two legs on different airlines...had to get my bags and go back through security to get on my next leg...never again...
