Wife was home alone today (no pics). A random dude knocked on the door and claimed he was a door to door rep for some home security company and shower her a name tag. Was asking her if I was home, if we had an alarm system, and asked her if he could come in and check our thermostat.
She was smart enough to not let him in the house, but to not piss him off too much she asked if he had any brochure or information on the security company. He didn't. He asked if he could come back when I was home and she told him yes, but I doubt he'll show up.
The whole thing sounded pretty sketchy to me. I'm pretty sure my wife just avoided being raped or at the very least robbed.
Or am I just being paranoid and over-protective?

Sounds pretty suspicious. You might get robbed.
ETA: just assume the worst, bro. Take precautions

she shouldn't even open the door to strangers when she's alone

Yeah, that would make me nervous. You might want to call the police (non-emergency) line and report the suspicious behavior, in case someone else in the neighborhood got robbed or he comes back. They might be able to do extra patrols in the neighborhood or something.

Y'all got a fire arm in the house bro?
Serious question too. My wife knows how to use everyone of mine and their always ready to be used.

The days of being courteous to people like that are long gone in my opinion. Don't trust anyone

If he does come back I'll be answering the door with my side arm.

I think you are just being paranoid...based on what you told us, sounds like he did exactly what any alarm salesman would do...
a way for her to handle that in the future is to just ask him for the name and number of his company, and leave him outside while she calls them to verify...

Have you asked the neighbors if they had the same thing happen?

Get a guard dog. I mean a trained one. There's a guy in MS who sells Swinfords.

Why does an alarm salesman need to look at your thermostat

Guess a mini schnauzer doesn't count.

Wife and daughter both know how to most of the pistols around the house, the revolvers especially.
Good practice, Doc, unless you've got little ones roaming about.
