This is going to be for the wife for Mothers day.

We do need basic microsoft office for home but can get it heavily discounted through my employer for MAC or standard PC.

Wife will mostly does pictures of the kid, itunes, some movies, will get traveled quite a bit. Would be nice if was reasonable size and light.

We do have photoshop elements for our vista laptop, would be nice to be able to use it again.

Suggestions?

EDIT - She is hell on a battery, count on it being left on and never plugged in until dead

My wife loves her Mac and uses it for the whole video and pics thing. She does the whole movie maker thing also and hasn't complained once about it. Loves the FaceTime and other stuff too but she's an Apple addict. We've had her Mac for about a year + now also.

Prices can get up there though for Mac.

I'm a Windows guy but hey, if it keeps the wife happy I guess

Good luck bro

MacBook if you can afford. Love my macs and considering how often I use it, well worth the money IMO. You'll get a cheaper price on a windows machine if you are super worried bout the costs.

I love my MacBook

it has great battery life and if it goes dead, it turns on immediately when you plug it in with no waiting for it to boot up or whatever. And they're very thin and lightweight

I got a 15 inch Mac book in August of 2009 and the thing runs like I just took it out of the box. It's worth the money on the long run. It has never let me down.

MacBook Air has about a 12 hour battery life, and charges full in about an hour. They also just lowered their prices too.

Apple's latest OS update added tons of battery saving features. 13" macbook pros have a rated battery life of 9 hours, the 15" is at 8 hours. I myself am going to replace my 2011 13" MacBook Air with a Skylake retina MacBook Pro when those come out (late 2015 or early 2016)

MacBook Air. Apple recently announced a new air with a faster processor and cheaper price. 13" starts at $999.00.

Only had it two weeks. Couldn't bring myself to spend 3X as much no a mac. if money is no object, get a mac book. My IT guy at work recommended the Asus.

It seems like the storage may be a bit low on the mac book air. Everything I am reading says get 500g or more the hard drive.... especially with pictures and videos. What is this "flash storage" thing?

Laments terms, flash storage is a really really fast version of a thumb drive. Versus the standard 13" pro with its slower platter based hard drive.

Get yourself an external thunderbolt drive and keep photos and movies on it.
Thunderbolt 2 has 20 gigs of transfer rate per second. You can work real time off an external thunderbolt drive.

Any one know anything about these fancy lenovo's. We have them at work and they seem just fine for work stuff..... not sure about anything else. Good battery life.

I can run my MBP on battery all day. I've never been able to do that with any of my HP laptops

Now I have had a kernel panic issue with my new MBP they are trying to help me fix

Is it a memory error causing it to kernel panic?

They have scanned it twice saying it is not a hardware issue. But we completely reformatted the HD and it is still doing it. SO I will find out more today.
