Best shoes for hiking/backpacking?

Anyone have any recommendations for hiking shoes? I'm going on a 5 day backpacking trip this summer and will hopefully hike more often in the future. I'm kinda new at this. Thanks.

I have the Salomon Synapse Mids. Great hiking boot/shoe.
Used them last week all across the Texas hill country.

I wonder if I should get a boot or a shoe. The Synapse Mids look like they are sort of in-between, huh?

I love my Merrell Moab shoes. I would stick with shoes and avoid boots, unless you like to backpack with 40 lbs on your back.

I had the Merrell hiking boots and they looked kind of dikey but they were easily the most comfortable shoes I owned and they were durable as shite. While you may not want a hiking boot, I recommend the Merrell brand in general, they make quality stuff

where you going? Mountains or fairly flat? How much weight you carrying? How many miles a day are you hiking?

Yea, I prefer the mid because they're between a high ankle boot and a low ankle shoe.
These have a lot of ankle support. More than you'd ever imagine.

Shenandoah NP on the Appalachian Trail. I'm not really sure how much elevation change there is. I'll probably be carrying around 30-40 pounds. I guess we'll be doing around 10-15 miles a day.

While boots offer more support, I can hike much further in shoes with less fatigue than with boots. That's why i gave up my Asolo boots. I backpack including water at about 30 lbs, which is perfect for me in a shoe.
I'd suggest trying on boots and shoes, but stick with Merrell.

what kind of gear do you have and what kind of terrain?
i've been trying to just drop backpack weight so i can wear minimalist trail runners. did it last summer. no issues at all, and i have historically f'ed up IT bands.
boots are hot and heavy and unnecessary, imo.
get your pack and body weight to optimal levels (decide what's important to you and cut everything else).
If you plan to do this regularly, invest in good lightweight gear.
(OB topic too, although the OB is mostly about huntin' and killin')

Merrell has some good offerings for $100 - $200. Don't need to spend a fortune if this isn't a hobby.
If you're in rocky terrain or heavy pack, find something that supports the ankle like a mid height boot. Don't order online, go somewhere you can find something you know will fit.

I have these and really like them. They are light, and feel more like high top shoes than boots
Merrell Moad Ventilator Mid
I also picked up some Keen Voyager Mids. The toe box is wider, so if the Merrels don't fit the way you like you may want to try them

They make some mid heights that are basically trail runners with ankle support.
I got some Adidas trail runners last year, destroyed them on my second day hike. They aren't built for any kind of terrain outside of a smooth trail IMO. I'm sure there's better out there, but I do like ankle support with a pack or uneven terrain.

pretty much me. I wear my Asolos around the yard (it's a jungle) and in crappy weather. Not on backpacking trips any more. I generally backpack in places where i don't have to carry much water, and we have our food down to min weight.
I'm about to do a radical weight shave once i have some money to spare (which is never, but gonna do it anyway).
