Site is shutting down. Last reviews were early April and they are closing the forums end of May.

Bit of a shocker. I haven't used the site as much in recent times but I used to always read the snarky recaps of my favorite shows.

Surprised it has ceased operations. Really was one of the best recap sites although the funniest writers moved on long ago.

At one time that was an awesome site and a great place to both discuss tv shows in forums and to read some funny recaps. I remember it even before they were TWOP. They used to be called MightyBig TV but had to change the name due to some copyright claim I think.

But, for me, the site faded many years ago after the original creators (Wing Chung, Sars and Glark ) sold it and bowed out. It was never the same after that. Haven't been to that site in years.

Damn seriously? I use to read that site religiously when LOST was in full swing. That's hard to believe.

Yeah. The good writers have been gone a while. In the Golden Times, all of the reviews were laced with sarcasm and wit.

I think I slowly stopped reading because most of the reviews were just straight up recaps.

When I saw the announcement on April 1st I just assumed it was an April Fool's joke.
Some of you mentioned that their best writers left, but I loved reading M. Giant's recaps. Does anyone know where he is now?

The funny thing is I loved TWOP in its heyday and I love this site. But they are polar opposites in terms of things like how the forums were moderated and worldview of most posters.

TWOP was VERY strictly moderated. And yet it worked for them. While one of the great strengths of this site (talking TD as a whole, not necessarily just the MTV board) is how open the moderation is.

And politically/culturally of course the two sites couldn't be further apart.

Anyone remember a site called Jump The Shark? User reviews of TV series, new and old. Some of the reviews were hilarious.

Recaps were often great (although I haven't read them in years), but the forums were no fun. The level of moderation was ridiculous and too constricting.

It was definitely highly moderated. The rule that always cracked me up was the no "boards-on-boards" rule. ie: no talking about the site, the posters or the trends in conversation. Everything had to be strictly discussion of the show.

If they tried that on here I think it would get rid of over half of the posts.

Last time I lurked (a while back) the moderation was ridiculous.

The mods were enforcing a rule about only discussing the episode in the OP and would freak even if somebody referenced something from a previous episode that tied into the current one up for discussion.

If participation was declining and had anything to do with the site closing (and it might be for a totally different reason), they kind of brought that one on themselves. There's a line between "tightly moderated" and running things like a prison.

Mods were Nazis. If they didn't like your topic, they would find any nitpick to axe the thread. I gave up on the forums pretty pretty pretty soon after joining the forums.

The West Wing recaps were epic. I also love that Aaron Sorkin got into it with one of the original moderators and satirized her on the TWW.

So are there any other good, snarky recap sites out there today?

The original founders of TWoP - Wing, Glark, and Sars - have a new site Previously TV.

It has forums and recaps and isn't as tightly wound as TWoP was in it's later years.

I've been posting and reading there. Pretty good site.

Apparently it had mostly to do with not being able to find a way to monetize the web traffic. I read that in an article a few weeks ago.

AV Club is excellent...

TWOP was good many years ago, but it seemed to quickly go from snarky to promotional. I always assumed that ownership changed to someone with a vested interest in the shows...
