I am almost complete with my deck and pergola build. all that's left is handrails and stairs. My dad, brother, and myself built it. It looks great.

The evening sun shines directly in my backyard, so the last 2-3 hours of sunlight shine directly through my pergola. Want something to block that. My backyard is medium sized. I was thinking a red maple. Nothing that gets bigger than 40-50'. If i can find a solid 30' tree with ample foliage and strong roots, would be perfect.

I also have a small area with room for a small flowering tree. Was thinking taiwan cherry blossom, but nursery said they don't grow well here. I've also thought of dogwood, silverbell, and a fringe tree. What's your thoughts?

I've been using this as a guide to what grows well down here.

I would recommend an evergreen like a live oak or magnolia. Both of them will get bigger than you are looking for but probably not in your lifetime.

If you canfigure out the lacking search feature on this site there are a few threads with lots of knowledge on this subject.

Personally I like Drake Elms and Swamp Maples

Yeah, oak would be too large. Right now I have a Myrtle in my back yard. Not sure what kind. I can always plant another one of those, because it is the perfect height right now and gives off the kind of shade i want, at the moment. However, when winter comes, that thing is barren. I want something relatively fast growing.

Try a silver maple. One of my favorite trees. Thick foliage yet still sturdy and flexible enough not to break in high winds (unlike something like a Drake elm).

I hate palm trees. Not a thing about them i like, unless i live on the beach. That and i have a dog that i don't want to poison.

I had an Arizona Ash in the backyard of my first home. It was a beautiful, lovely tree. I don't think you would be disappointed if you got one.

Dogwoods do best in shaded areas. How about a fruit tree? Pears and crab apples bloom in the spring plus you get the fruit off of them.

The area i'm thinking would be perfect. Morning sun is in the front of the house. The area i'm looking at doesn't get sun until around noon. Then, around 4-5 oclock, i'll have the red maple (if i decide to go that route) and the pergola to provide some more shade. I'd say that area would get 5 hours of sunlight.

I'm also worried about symmetry in my backyard. I'm no landscape designer, so i'm not sure how it will look in the end. But i love tree cover. Right now, in my backyard i have planted some sort of maple that's a good 20 feet +, a turkey fig, that's about 2 years old (about 3' in height), and 2 blueberry bushes that i planted. I'm curious if the maple would contrast too much with the other trees i already have.

frick palms

I have yet to see a good looking dogwood down in south LA, unless it gets babied to the extreme to get established. And even at that, its not a great specimen.

Halesia diptera var. magniflora is a cool small tree in Spring......bigger bloom than the normal Silverbell.
