Promise Ring vs Engagement Ring

To me it seems like a promise ring is just a cheaper version of an engagement ring. Both rings mean the same thing. What's the point of a promise ring?

I just got a stone in a basic band for the engagement ring and let her pick the setting to put the rock in for the wedding ring.

My GF and I are in a debate as to whether she was engaged to an ex who gave her a promise ring. I feel like it counts as an engagement and she says nope.

Promise ring is meant as a symbol that "I promise we will be together forever and I want to marry you" . basically just to shut your woman up and make her happy for a few minutes.
Engagement ring is the beginning of planning for the wedding, its the death row of the execution. It won't shut her up very long as she will then begin to throw lots of useless stress and choices on you for this so called ceremony.

My wife didn't force shite on me with the planning. Asked a few opinions and if I didn't care if just say "I'm indifferent" and she'd pick.
