I haven't been to Middendorf's in almost twenty years. The first time I went I had the stuff flounder and it was just short of awful. I know Middendorf's is a catfish place. I'm allergic to catfish so I can't eat it. The flounder sounded good so I gave it a shot. Everyone enjoyed their catfish that night. I didn't go back because it just considered it a catfish place and evidently a great one because everyone raved about it.

Flash forward to, I think 2007, give or take a year, Horst Pfeifer buys Middendorf's. I was glad to hear it because I believe Horst Pfeifer to be a very good chef and had some great meals at his restaurant Bella Luna. I put it on the list of restaurants to go back to.

Flash forward to today. The wife and I were deciding on where to have lunch and she remembered Middendorf's. We had been wanting to go there since Pfeifer bought it. You know how life always gets in the way especially if you have kids. We would think about eating there after we went somewhere else to eat or were passing by on 55.

Well, I digress, today we went to Middendorf's. I was looking forward to it. We get there and it's a pretty cool place and it's packed. People coming in large groups after us. This is going to be a great meal, I'm thinking.

I judge a seafood type place, rightly or wrongly by the onion rings. If a Restaurant doesn't make their own onion rings it falls a notch or two. The onion rings arrive and WTF! I mean seriously Horst. W? T? F? You're and accomplished Chef. One of the best! Frozen fricking onion rings? I can't have catfish as I stated earlier so I order the shrimp and oyster plate. Four meh shrimp, four over fried oysters and a smattering of french fries. My wife had the catfish and she said it wasn't bad but may not be as good as it was the last time she ate there. Any way, not worth the thirty minute drive, and over priced. As they say on the OT. I am disappoint.

Rant completed.

You would think with a chef of Pfeifer's caliber I could get some decent fried seafood and onion rings made from scratch. Oh well.

Edited to add:

The fried seafood was decent. Just decent. I was expecting so much more from a Horst Pfeifer restaurant.

Why would you expect more? It's a fried food joint, always has been always will be with thin catfish it's specialty. It's what I eat. It's all I eat there. It's all I expect to be worth eating there. It's the only thing that is good there. It's what I had at 4:00 this afternoon while sitting on the boat and it was as it has been since the first time my father tied our boat up there in 1969, grabbed an ice cold Jax beer and we all had thin fried catfish.

They serve oysters?

Their catfish is solid every time I've been and they have some of the best tartar sauce

My dad routed every trip I went on as a kid by Middendorfs. Going to the Grand Canyon via Monroe? Let's swing by Middendorfs first. I'm not that bad but if it's close to meal time I'm going to stop by erytime I'm close. Good fried seafood and lots o nostalgia. I'm a fan.

Middendorf's thin fried catfish is really good. However, Spahr's in Des Allemands is the place for fried catfish. The catfish chips are the best fried catfish I've ever had.

Mike, shitty review...allergic to "catfish"...??? The place does some things well. It is what it is. Oyster stew is old school and top ouch. Catfish, soft shells and the whole flounder ( last time I got one in the early '90's ) have always been first rate. Did they fire your son from his dish washing gig?

Who judges a seafood restaurant based only on onion rings?

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of

I won't disagree with you. I'd say in my opinion, they both are on equal footing. I do think Spahrs came back just as strong after the fire.

I'll qualify by saying whichever one I'm passing by I'm stopping. I was at a friends on Tickfaw today hence the boat ride to Mittendorfs. I was in Golden Meadow two weeks ago and Spahrs was on the way home. I'm a fan of both but I do think Spahrs is not as well known as it should be.

Agreed. Spahr's is the only place where I'll order catfish. At Middendorf's I usually get the softshell crab.

Because Horst Pfeifer is or was a top notch Chef. You should be able to order other items of the menu and expect a very good meal.

Then I should be able to expect great fried seafood. It was fsr from it. It was decent. Why should I drive 30 minutes to get decent seafood and smallish portions. I will stick to closer to home.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm also sure you had had a few beers. Alcohol deadens the taste buds.

I don't know about raw but the fried oysters were over cooked.

Sorry to rustle Jimmies but it's not unreasonable to expect a better than decent meal. Especially considering who the owner is.

The spahr's in thibodaux is solid. Only one I've tried.

Middendorfs in the 90's was cool when my parents were paying.

I had some broiled catfish last time to change it up about a month ago at Middendorf's, and it was good.

Didn't have any fried though.

Not really. Wouldn't you expect a top notch seafood restaurant to make their own instead of offering pre-cooked frozen crap.

They serve BBQ oysters. I got them for an app last summer. They're awful. The soft shell crab was money though.

Other than fried, just get the oyster stew...trust me . There half she'll cooked offerings are decent, except for the BBQ'd, which suck.
