If you were asked how many concentrations camps were operated in Nazi Germany during WWII what would be your guess? The answer is 20,000 in total.

That number is altogether, not just in Germany.

Depends on what you think a concentration camp is. If you are thinking Treblinka and Auschwitz you would be wrong. Vast majority in the 20,000 figure existed only temporarily as transit and processing stations in captured territory and were demolished not long after their use was completed.

Do you think that lands they had defeated in battle were not theirs?

All I know is that you must go to one in your lifetime. It is an eye opening experience. Not to hijack your post, but it is the one reason why a free people should never surrender their arms. EVER.

Well you don't murder 6million jews in only a handful of places.

But honestly, I had no idea that there were that many.

You do know that dedicated extermination camps aren't the same thing as a concentration camp right? There were maybe 1200 major camps responsible for the bulk of deaths.

I'm definitely surprised. I would have guessed it was a trick question like "How many witches were burned at the stake in Salem?" (Zero--they were hanged.)

In the same vein, I was expecting a very low number, with the reason being that the camps were located primarily in occupied territories.

No they were in lands occupied by Germany after being defeated in a shooting war and considered German lands as a result of those facts. That idea was repeated over and over as Germany started its' eastern campaign in '41.

Do these (unidentified) camps include the camps for Soviet POW's? almost 3 million were killed in captivity during the first 6 months following the attack on the USSR.
