Did the OB come to a consensus on the best caliber of deer rifle for youths?

I just recently acquired a 7mm-08 due to these threads after being a .243 guy forever out of nostalgia. The difference in recoil to me was insignificant. My daughter and niece could tell a difference. I've since added a mercury recoil reducer to the stock and a muzzle brake. The decrease in felt recoil is tremendous. I think I'm a convert. This now has me wondering if a larger caliber would be the ideal with the extra modifications and maybe even adding more weight to the gun since it will be for stand hunting and not carrying. Thoughts?

Nothing wrong with a .243. Don't discount the .30-.30 either.

Any of the reduced recoil loads. My 15 year old shoots a 7 Mag with reduced recoil ammo and doesn't phase him.

.50 BMG or .577 T-rex

Now that's an idea.

That muzzle break makes a tremendous difference in recoil, concussion, and muzzle blast (noise).
My brother put one on his AR and the difference in concussion between his and mine was night and day. It actually took me a little bit to get used to it.

I've killed many deer with my 22-250. It's probably my favorite rifle that I own.

7mm08
It is the perfect whitetail round for the southeastern U.S.

7mm-08 is ideal IMO.
With a brake pretty much anything from .30-06 down will be easy on the shoulder and hell on the ears.

Nope.
Having said that, the 7-08 is one of a number of a handful of guns that are fine whitetail rigs that and will serve a hunter well whether he's 8 or 80 years old. Personally, I think a 7-08 w/ reduced recoil loads is a top notch youth deer rifle as is w/o extra accessories, but that's just my opinion. A potential problem w/ 7-08 is ammo availability. I bought a 7-08 handgun last summer and couldn't find either brass to hand load or factory ammo. A friend gave me a box of brass to go along w/ a box the seller threw in w/ the gun or I would've had to convert 308 or 243 brass to 7-08. Heck, my local WM doesn't even stock 7-08 ammo. Get ahead of the ball game and buy some 7-08 ammo whenever you see it.

7/08. Especially if you reload your own. And I have seen it in WM

7MM/08 i stock the regular remington and barnes ammo. waiting for the reduced recoil to be restocked.

Dad started me with 270. I say I was 11-12?

I was raised on traditional rounds. .243 30-06 etc. The 7mm08 had converted me to a fan. The main issue is availability of ammo. But I usually stockpile a shite ton when I find it.
With the mod's to the gun, it has hardly any recoil. Loud but we always shoot with ear protection. And I'll probably get them electronic ear muffs to wear hunting. I'd never shot one with a muzzle brake until a few years ago. And although I new it'd be louder, DAMN! I think shooting in muffs is a must. I think the noise can make ya flinch moreso than the recoil.

Got lil choupique a 7mm08 when he was 8
He has taken a dozen deer with it...only two traveled more than a step....one a 200lb doe on an outrageous long shot - heart shot she went 30 yards three jumps
One slid 50 yards down a hill....
Now that he has graduated to the 280
I use the 08 when I make a rifle hunt...
But peak of rut. With a big boy located....he wanted 08..
7mm08 was recommended by several shooters I respect greatly

Just got my sons back after having the MB added. Savage Youth Trophy Hunter 7mm-08. It came with the accutrigger. I have not had time to take it to the range yet.
