Marshy Area in Bonnet Carre Spillway - South of Lake P

Along I-10. Has anyone ever fished this area? I look at it every morning driving in to work and it seems like there should be some decent fishing here. Is it worth checking out? I see the camps down there but I think they're just for the duck hunters and crab fishermen mainly.

I work with a guy who owns 1 of those camps
He caught a mess of crabs out there this past week
He kills snakes out there all the time too

I have often wondered this as well...it is very shallow and the bottom is pretty muddy, so fishing may be tough in that area...
that the stretch through manchac on I-55 and the stretch you mention are some of my favorite places to drive in LA...I have seen a couple of bald eagles in that area as well...

I have an uncle that worked at Shell Motiva on Airline highway right before you get to the Spillway bridge. He had access to that area you are asking about, he accessed it from the rear of the Motiva tank farm area that is on the north side of Airline.
He used a pirouge and used to catch fresh water fish back there. I remember going to fish fries at his house where he fried dozens of bream.
He also used to squirrel hunt back there, there were ridges that had squirrel populations.

That used to be some of the most polluted water in America. Ton of heavy metals in the water near those plants. It's gotten better, but I wouldn't eat fish from there if I were you.

Yeah, I fish that I-55 corridor from Manchac to Ruddock more than anywhere else. I just saw a lot of activity in the water around I-10 this morning on the way to work. I just wasn't sure if it was worth trying to get in there or not.

I throw back 90% of the freshwater fish I catch anyway. So that wouldn't be a big deal.

Those two camps with the flag poles look like lots of fun. Too bad they have to walk outside and stare at the interstate.

You cannot beat fried white perch, bream, or even bass. Catfish is down my list of fresh water fish, but throwing these species away is sacreligious from my parts.
I'm also concerned about your compass and sense of direction. South of Lake P is Lake Borne and then the Gulf of Mexico. The area in question is realistically west of Lake P.
I'm interested in seeing other replies here about the fishing here though.

If we have strong east winds for a long time then trout will go over there. It's pretty rare though. Anytime that side of the lake gets salty enough to catch fish, you'd have better luck fishing the powerlines out of the mouth of the Tangipahoa. I've caught a few bass over there too.

That's definitely south of Lake Pontchartrain.
West of Lake Ponchartrain is the Manchac swamps. He's definitely describing the area between Norco and LP, which is def south of the lake.

discussion started about the little dots of water in the bottom left (SW) corner of this map. La Branche wetlands, Bayou Tregpnaier, that area. All definitely south of Lake Pontchartrain.

Haha...I know I am traveling east on I-10 and it is to my right. To be fair, it's actually Southwest as the interstate doesn't run due east and west in that area. But I still consider it the southern side of Lake P.

I agree with this, however, I am not the greatest bass fisherman, even though I love doing it. But I do love to fish. So bringing back a few bass just really isn't worth it to me. I also hardly ever fish sacaulait or bream, just because I like fishing bass more. As far as catfish, I'll just go to the store and buy tilapia before eating those.
I won't turn them down if someone else is cooking them, but I'll damned sure not cook them myself. haha

Thanks for the warnings.
I stopped by my uncle's house a few weeks ago to visit. He is 89 and outlived all his siblings, including my father. When I pulled up to his house, he was pushing a lawn mower around his front lawn. So it doesn't seem like all those fish he ate from back there hurt him too much.

Good to hear about his health.
However, I wouldn't base my eating decisions or recommend others do something based on a singular case. Some people have the genetic makeup so that ingesting heavy metals won't cause negative outcomes. Not everyone does.
