You wanted a significant step up in Wisconsin's early season strength of schedule? You got it. This time around, the Badgers didn't settle for an opener against one of those FCS patsies. Instead, Wisconsin will kick off its season against LSU in one of the most important openers perhaps in Badgers football history. We have no idea how good Wisconsin's team actually is given questions about the Badgers' starting quarterback, receivers, kickers and safeties, among others. But the Badgers will have a pretty darn good idea after they walk off the NRG Stadium field in Houston the night of Aug. 30.

Personnel: Sophomore quarterback Anthony Jennings is the leader in the clubhouse to be LSU's starter as summer workouts approach. Jennings, some Wisconsin fans might remember, was a hero last season on senior day when he bailed out LSU with a 99-yard touchdown drive against the Bret Bielema-led Arkansas Razorbacks to keep Bielema winless in the SEC. But true freshman Brandon Harris excelled during the Tigers' spring game in early April. Harris completed 11 of 28 passes for 195 yards with three touchdowns. He also rushed six times for a team-high 75 yards and another touchdown. Jennings completed 9 of 17 passes for 157 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. LSU has the nation's top incoming running back in Leonard Fournette, who could make an impact immediately. Some have called Fournette the best running back to come out of high school since Adrian Peterson.

LSU returns seven total starters on defense and will be one of the quickest and most aggressive defenses Wisconsin will see all season. A year ago, the Tigers ranked No. 15 nationally in total defense (340.7 yards allowed per game) and No. 13 in passing defense (197.5 yards allowed).
quote:
NFL draftees: The Tigers broke the school record with nine players selected in the 2013 NFL Draft. The previous mark of eight was set back in 1948. Over the past five NFL drafts, the Tigers have had 32 players selected. Wisconsin has had 19 players taken over the past five seasons. Strong odds: LSU was given 16-to-1 odds to win a national championship, according to Bovada, which is behind only six teams in 2014 (Florida State, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, Auburn, Oklahoma). Wisconsin was given 33-to-1 odds, which ranks tied for the 13th-best odds. Prediction: LSU 31, Wisconsin 21

Nice article. Thanks for sharing. If you find anything offering Wisconsin previews, it would be appreciated

You could substitute LSU for Wisconsin in this paragraph and it would be a good analysis of where we are.

What? No
This isn't one of the most important openers in our history, and we play good teams to start the season all the time

That's what I thought he meant at first too. But I think he was referring to their question marks.

Hard to see Wisconsin scoring 21 in that game. They only return 9 starters on the entire roster. THey have nobody that is a threat right now (who knows when/if that will change) at WR, their OL isn't as strong as it was during their Rose Bowl trips years, and they have to replace pretty much all of their front seven on defense.
They will not be able to replace (reload) that WR that wore #4 and Borland at linebacker.

Yeah, the article predicted a score of 31-21. It might have the right amount of total points scored, just not allocated properly:
LSU 42-10

I was referring to the questions regarding positions, but...isn't our most important game always the next one ??????

Thanks for that write up. Wisconsin loses a lot on defense (entire front seven), has problems with special teams, lose their top wideout, second leading receiver in TE Pedersen, and third leading receiver in RB White (all having at least 300 yards and 2 TDs). Not to forget their fourth leading receiver is also gone. They also lose a safety and moves the other safety (their return leading tackler) to LB. Despite having a QB who had decent stats, nearly 2500 yards 22 TD 13 int, he is having a hard time keeping his job.
IMO, LSU wins this won by at least two TDs. Thing that separates us from them is talent and defense. Although talent won't completely make up for experience, it is much better than average talent AND no experience. Big talent can mask experience, just ask Peterson, Mathieu, Reid, Robinson, Hunter, Mingo, Montgomery, Beckham, Hilliard, Hill, etc. Our defense is now experienced at all levels (DT may not be position wise, but the DEs are). Add to the fact of nabbing guys like Dupre and Quinn, who would be the best players on Wisconsin's offense minus Gordon, and you see what I'm saying. I'm pretty sure Wisky would die to have Dural (who is similar to Abbrederis), Smith (who is way more talented than Pedersen), and Harris (who would highly likely start over their QBs). Their running backs are overall better than ours (until Fournette gets here), and their OL is starter heavy just like ours is.
I say both teams rely almost exclusively on their run game. We start off rusty on the line because of their power running game and our young DTs, and they have no chance of stopping us as we wear their inexperienced front seven down.
Final score is 41-20
LSU
280 rush yards 4 TD
165 pass yards 1 TD
2 FG
Wisconsin
220 rush yards 2 TD
115 pass yards
2 FG

Early betting line on the game is LSU -3.

That seems too close to me. The ten points in the OP's linked write-up seems pretty reasonable.
Wisconsin will have a very decent defense, but the offense is very questionable. The team has two excellent running backs and little else on that side of the ball. A very mediocre returning QB and no looming stars to replace him.
The offensive line is an empty shell compared to the 2010 group and the wide receivers are small, but slow. (that's an overstatement, but not by much.)
On the other hand, Gary Andersen has taken an even less talented group from Utah State on the road to Auburn, and played them very tough. He's a coach with great potential.
I hope Vegas is right and the game stays close throughout, but I really don't see how.
