My son just got a wheelchair last week. We've known about this and discussed this at length with the school. The nurse called and said they have to have a letter from the doctor in order for him to use the wheelchair at school. Like, I can't bring him to school on Monday without it. Is that legal?

The doctor faxed one over and it's taken care of, but the nurse just laughed when I told her what I needed and said she has never had to do that before.

I know for a fact most state employees are pretty clueless about ADA.

Its an uphill battle for sure.

Now, in his IEP, it's stated that he needs and uses a wheelchair to get around the school. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Really? Did they say anything about it at all? They also say they don't know if they have a desk to accommodate him

I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.

It's a document from someone on the same side as the school saying what is needed.

The school just sounds like they are trying to cover their arse in case your child is injured in the chair or something. Who knows. People are paranoid about everything these days.

He's been in a wheelchair since he started pre-k, so that may be why it isn't an issue.

The school is required by federal law to provide a desk that will work with his chair. For our son, he actually has a tray that attaches to the arms on his wheelchair, so it works out. He's pretty much at eye level with the rest of his first grade classmates, although he was a good but higher than them when he was in pre-k.

I have offered several times to meet and change his IEP as this is a big, new change. No response. Just get a letter. They also want a letter for him to wear a cooling vest under his uniform that they will never see or mess with.

1. They are being lazy.
2. They probably think they are going to have to spend money they don't have, but in actuality, they are allotted funds for this by the government.

Jesus. Hearing stories like yours makes me appreciate how lucky we are to have our son where he is. Of course, he started there in the second year of the schools existence, so we were able to set the table for them early on. Now they are way more prepared to have other kids with severe physical disabilities enroll there, although there are only 2 out of about 425.

Actually, I used to be one. But for kids with autism. I don't know jack about physical impairments and don't trust any of the "advocates" at the school board because well, they work for the school board.
