When will "system defensive players" become a hot term in the NFL?

The guys on ESPNBR are batting around the conversation that Cowherd/Kiper had today. Basically, that LSU puts players in the NFL with a higher ceiling. Alabama players have pecked by the time that they reach the league.

Will we start to hear the term "system defensive players" as much as we used to hear system QB's a few years back?

I think "system-whatever" is just a post-hoc explanation given by draft analysts to excuse for the poor job they did analyzing certain draft picks.

I actually had a Bama die hard tell me this 5 or 6 months ago. It resonated with me and made a lot of sense. I was very surprised a Bama fan would readily admit that... especially to an LSU fan.

Why were you surprised? He basically told you Nick Saban gets every ounce of potential out of his players and Les Miles doesn't.

Anybody who didn't already know this is not a CFB fan.

Saban getting the most of his players isn't surprising. The players peaking and not maintaining a level of success in the NFL is. One would think they'd be very much pro ready however you see a lot of Bama flops.

Only way you can say a D player is a product of the system is if its a DB and strictly plays zone / man. Or if its a player that fits into a 3-4 more so than a 4-3.

But for the most part, defensive players are the freaks in the NFL and are there to wreck havoc. Run and hit, guarding your guy, getting after the QB, etc. All that fits into any defensive system.

Offensive systems are usually more specific with what type of skill set they need to run it and be successful in it. Nobody is gonna want Joe Flacco to run a dink and dunk system. And nobody wants a noodle armed QB in a vertical passing attack. Defensive systems , for the most part, are pretty broad and most systems ask you to do the same thing.

If Saban gets all the best talent how come they don't end up the best pros if he gets all their talent out of them?

It sounds more like Les provides better development toward pro careers. Bama has held the top 3 recruiting classes the last 5 or so years. LSU probably averages between 5 - 10. Very good but not the elite talent Saban has.

I think it is pretty clear that a couple examples of system quarterback existed.

Example, Colt Brennan, Hawaii

Disappointing... but I see it. But with* guys leaving earlier now, it's gradually changing. That stereotype isn't as strong as it was in the past.

Typical reply from a system-poster.

I don't think it's about LSU players making some great big leap as opposed to getting more bang for your buck... especially regarding draft value and meeting expectations.

It is true that some teams(bama) have system players but it's up to the nfl to draft according to their team. They have guys that can play other positions but not many in the front 7 can. Saban is mow recruiting more of the athletic lbers/ends.

I agree with one, maybe 2 players that were Duke guys. But the history of Duke players in the NBA isn't all that good. Projected to be superstars in the NBA, when in actuality they are mid to low tier role players.
