Downtown? If she likes sushi, there's no more "novelty" than Tsunami with it's view of the river. Stroube's is very nice as well.

If you're willing to go a little farther out, Juban's, Galatoire's, Le Creole, Louisiana Lagniappe, Bousolei (or however it's spelled), ect are all solid. Just remember, most every restaurant will be packed to the max so reservations or having someone in your party go early to wait for a table is a must.

Tsunami is not open on Sundays or Mondays because the Shaw Center is closed.

The only Sunday that Stroubes is ever opened is actually Mother's Day. Very good choice IMO!
