Is AutoTrader worth the cost vs. Craigslist?

As a seller, is it worth posting my vehicle for sale on AutoTrader as opposed to Craigslist? I ask, because it appears all I attract are unqualified buyers or scammers every time I post something on Craigslist.
Does the "pay to post" method eliminate some of this?

I'd say it depends on the value of the car. If you are trying to sell a 3-5k clunker, just as easy on CL.
If you are trying to sell a 15k+ car that someone may need financing for, I'd go autotrader.
That's been my experience.

It's a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Only 17,800 miles.
I am asking in the 20's for it. Had a buyer or so I thought - he was very interested, met him once in person and talked to him several times over a two week period. The day we were going to meet (for him to purchase) again, he flaked out completely.
And he was in his late 60's too.

When I bought my last car, the seller told me he had eight people come look at it...zero came from the AutoTrader ad, every one came from the "for sale" sign he put in the window.

That happened to me when I was looking for a car. I met with the seller. Negotiated a price and both agreed. Paid to have the car inspected and when on the day we were supposed to do the sale, he went MIA on me. I never heard from him again. I waited for three days, then I just moved on to find something else.

This is what I will need to weigh out. With AutoTrader, I can offer my vehicle to prospective buyers who are thousands of miles away vs. placing a for sale sign in the window and parking it over the weekend at a local high school.

Start off buy putting a sign in the window and place it on CL. If you don't get any interest in a about two weeks, consider placing it on AutoTrader

The guy that was interested in buying mine met me approximately 1 hour away from my home - he had to drive 2 hours - looked at the vehicle, test drove it and said, this is in "much better condition than I expected."
He followed up with me, went to get his financing approved - I even spoke with his insurance agent and then literally the day before we were going to finalize the sale, he got backed out.
I should have collected some cash up front - lesson learned - as he would have had some skin in the game to follow through on his commitment.

Good advice and probably a good starting point. Looks like I'll need to create something online and place it in the window.

I would never agree to give a private seller cash upfront as a downpayment to hold the car or anything of that nature. I doubt anyone would agree to that

Point understood. However, based upon our interaction and "level of trust" at the time, I believe I should have asked for it. It could have broke the deal, but then again, I don't have a deal now anyway.

You talked me into buying that rock hard arse mattress from Resteva. That shite felt like I was laying on a bed of cement. Then it cost me an arm and a leg to return it.
Just messing with you. That was probably one of the worst purchases I've ever made though.

What color? 2dr or 4dr, standard or auto? Power Windows/Doors?
I have a friend that was looking for a Jeep not too long ago as a 2nd car, but he has a pretty specific wish list.
ETA: For the record, he is looking on Autotrader with no mileage restrictions. His philosophy, which I've sort of adopted in my car search, is that if the deal is good enough, you can always ship it to you or take a road trip.

Which model did you purchase? We're still using our equivalent to Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe model - no issues whatsoever.
Ours is very comfortable.

2 door, 6 speed manual and power windows / doors.
Upgraded tires too.

Fwiw, I did both about a year ago. CL was all flakes. Autotrader had the car sold in just under a week. The guy was in Tampa, he called Friday to inquire about the car and pulled up to my house Saturday morning with a trailer. I had a great experience with Autotrader. I was selling a Saab so it was going to have to be a particular buyer that wanted it. That buyer was in Tampa and Autotrader found him in under a week.

Worth it 100%. And pay for the premium listing. First ones that pop up after a search. I have sold 3 cars on autotrader.

Good to hear counterpoints. Without looking, how much (on average) does it cost to list a vehicle with AutoTrader for premium listing?
