I always find this intervention intriguing. What were the Soviets expecting when they started deploying troops?

Considering the Soviets kept their troops so close to home for their whole existence what made them decide this was the time to do so?

Did they not pay attention to what happened to the US in Vietnam just a few years earlier?

The Soviet conventional deployment was a result of KGB operations run amuck. The Soviet General Staff was generally opposed but once the Soviet advisors were killed in Herat in March of 1979 along with the general instability, they most likely felt there was no other choice. I wouldn't compare Vietnam to Afghanistan, but to US operations throughout our history to create stability in Mexico, Cuba, or the Caribbean.

They were propping up their puppet govt. Things stayed pretty tame in Kabul. It was out in the tribal areas where the war got ugly.

I guess I always just chalked it up to hubris.

Charlie Wilson was a pawn, but it made for a good book.
