This is kind of a spinoff from all the "what club should I follow/who is your favorite club" threads.

I've been following the sport for about 10 years now and still have not picked a favorite club. Probably never will. I can't really understand the concept. It never crossed my mind that I needed to. I've actually found that not having a favorite club makes watching games more enjoyable and easier to analyze without having a bias one way or the other. Am I alone in this?

I enjoy watching some teams more than others, obviously. But that can change from year to year and there's no real emotional attachment there. It's either just for the joy of watching soccer played really well or because I have money on the game.

People with this mindset often become Chelsea or Manchester United fans.

I don't understand what you mean by that. I do typically pull for English teams in the Champions League though.

I started out with a club. I no longer really have a club. I just really couldn't really bring myself to care that much anymore. I casually support teams that I enjoy watching/enjoy. What I watch frequently has changed over time, so I think that that is part of the problem, too. I'm a pretty hateful person, so I don't really think that I'm robbed of the passion of the game. Plus, I support the USA.

It's a perfectly valid way to follow the game, just as it's perfectly valid to find a team to follow.

I "picked" Chelsea as my European club and they are my favorite European club and I am an avid fan to this day, but I do really enjoy watching basically any other good team as well. I don't really like the other big clubs in England, but other than that I don't really have any strong feelings about any other European sides. I just like watching good soccer as well.

A little different for Sporting KC and MLS though, but there are other MLS sides that I can cheer for (especially in the CCL).

Agreed. My point wasn't meant to insinuate that choosing a club at random and going that route is the wrong way or anything. I was honestly just curious to see how many of you guys were like me.

I started watching Thierry Henry at Arsenal because I loved the way he played and ipso facto became an Arsenal supporter.

Other than that I just watch games and cheer for teams who don't consistently splurge on the transfer market every summer. Love watching clubs that build teams from their youth academies or sign young players before they are worldwide talents.

You're kinda weird. I am too though, so it's all good.

While I respect the art of building a squad through an academy, I really don't give a shite how good teams get good. I just prefer watching sports at the very highest level. And really rich dudes who buy European soccer teams give me this. Generally speaking and with a few exceptions, the best 3 or 400 players in the world play for about 20 teams. This makes for some incredibly stacked teams competing against one another to win their respective domestic leagues or the Champions League. Their is no other sport in the world that's more exciting than soccer at its highest level in terms of TV watchability and stadium atmosphere. And I don't think it's close.

I find watching sports with an emotional investment thoroughly more enjoyable.

That's not to say I won't watch sports without one. I don't really have an NFL team but I watch a good bit of it. Though it's mostly to watch certain players, fantasy/betting purposes, and rooting against teams/players I hate but it's a much lesser experience overall for me.

I do think "picking" a team is kind of tricky and often doesn't work though. I've mentioned before I tried to "pick" a team but it wasn't until watching the game more and more over a 3-4 year period that a team more or less became my own (and it wasn't the team I tried to "pick").

This may be the first time I've agreed with Randy. Watching with no attachment to a team is OK. But having a rooting interest makes it way more fun.

As long as you still hate Suarez, I don't see a problem with it.

I didn't think that you were trying to act as if you were superior to people who require a team to follow the sport, or anything.

Sure but it would be nice to come by that naturally and not just consciously pick some team that you have no natural connections to.

sports are all about having a bias. Competition is what makes the world go round. That's why I have a team, even if they suck terribly.

Not every American just randomly said, "Hey, that's the team I'm going to pick." I watched games and found that I gravitated towards Spurs. I like the players they had and the style of play. They were fun for me to watch. I did a little research on the club and liked them more after that. Over time, I found myself rooting more and more for them over other teams I had considered (Everton & Fulham mainly). Now, I would consider myself a "die-hard." I would consider my fandom's evolution about as natural as could be seeing how I'm 6 time zones away from England.

I find myself enjoying games more when Arsenal isn't playing, but I also don't watch as closely. I just genuinely love the sport and watch it all the time. It's the only reason I have cable. And a big arse TV.

I an 100% emotionally invested in LFC and the hate of a couple of other clubs... That said, I watch a ton of matches in all leagues and for the most part, just enjoy the game and the players...

side note: Brazilian League and Copa Libertadores are very under rated for pure enjoyment factor... If only GolTV came in HD
