In Houston, cops are taking a novel approach to arresting jerks who cut off cyclists. They’re going undercover on two wheels, and when things get too tight for the law, they're calling in for support.

In 2012, if you were cycling around the country, Houston ranked as one of the worst cities to make a stop. Out of 51 American cities in the last Alliance for Biking and Walking report, listed from low to high cyclist fatalities, Houston beat out other lethal cities for number 41.

But Houston could turn itself around, especially now that it’s implementing a “Goal Zero” bike safety program that aims to keep all its cyclists alive. Last Tuesday, Mayor Annise Parker announced a series of changes to the way the city went about its transportation business. Among those changes: Sting operations from plainclothes policemen riding bikes to catch drivers who pass cyclists too closely for the city’s three-foot mandated standard.

Be careful which bikers you buzz by super closely on Houston's streets. One of them might arrest you.

I guess I'd rather them do this than slow the morning commute down to a crawl for one of their sticker check stations.

The stance most people on this board alone seem to have against bike riders I think this is a good idea, a way to keep drivers honest since there isn't really any enforcement on this.

Cyclists are fine as long as they aren't riding on busy streets with no bike lanes during rush hour. If they do ride on busy streets during rush hour should be hit and maybe even killed.

Cyclists riding on streets, even during rush hour, do not slow down traffic. The pussy that sucks at driving, slows down traffic.

Not true. The right lane isn't wide enough for cars to pass cyclists without either veering around them into the middle lane or changing into the middle lane and cyclists can't ride as fast as the cars drive. Also at lights they cannot accelerate as fast as cars.

They aren't as bad as cyclists. Also, I do all of those when I drive so cyclists better watch the frick out. If I hit one ill be fine, I have insurance and ill just lie and say I wasn't texting or posting on TD. No biggie to me.

I can assure you most cyclist would rather not ride on heavily traveled streets because of people who text and drive. However sometimes it can't be avoided.

You sound like a prick, and I doubt you have enough insurance to cover killing someone in the right. But hey, test the waters.
