MD or MBA

A cousin is going to be a freshman in college and is asking me for advice on career paths. He torn between eventually getting an MBA and going into finance or an MD and becoming a doctor. My advice was finance. Only 2(sometimes 1) year of extra school, less debt if you need it, and salaries mid career are approximately the same if not higher in finance. Never become a Dr. for the $ or you'll be sorely disappointed. Thoughts?

Do both at a top 10 school.

Dude is still. In high school. He doesn't have to decide his career path just yet.

If he's getting an MBA make sure to tell him to focus on management or marketing. They the most profitable of the business majors according to a study done by California - Berekly.

Yes, I imagine all the doctors that occupy these jobs are sorely disappointed with themselves.

he needs to pump the brakes
most likely he won't end up being either one.
let him take some science and business classes his freshman year and see how he likes and handles them
then let him make that decision

Useless degree
Tell him to major in engineering, then venture off to the business side where he can be a project/program manager. That's where the big bucks are and all he'll have is 4 or 5 years worth of schooling.

Where you go to medical school means very little. Certainly much less than where you get an MBA or JD.

Step 1: Engineering degree in (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Civil, or Construction Management)
Step 2: work for a living
Step 3: get employer to pay for MBA
Step 4:???
Step 5: Profit

Do engineering if it interest him
1) Being an actual engineer is in demand and pays well
2) You can get into any of the professional graduate programs with it; JD, MBA, MD(and it will actually make it easier)
3) You can do almost any other job because people know you are smart and have problem solving skills

If there is doubt go to business school.
The great physicians that I know all say that being a physician was a calling and there never was another choice for them.

If I was going back to school I'd:
1. Major in economics
2. Try to get a couple of internships
3. ???
4. $$$

MD as a general practitioner ... the feds will pay for his schooling in exchange for a few years in a rural or urban setting ... then he can go where he wants ...
