Amazon just announced an agreement that makes Prime Instant Video the only strictly-online place to get certain HBO shows on-demand. Starting May 21st, Prime members will get exclusive, unlimited streaming access to pretty much every HBO original you're interested in except Game of Thrones.

Right out of the gate, Prime members will get access to every episode of The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Rome, Eastbown & Down, Enlightened, and Flight of the Conchords; and select seasons of Boardwalk Empire, True Blood, and Treme. Early seasons of Girls, The Newsroom, and Veep will be included as they pass the three-year mark from original airing.

Wow. I honestly never expected HBO to do something like this.

looks like they are waiting three years out, before they release any shows.

My previous stance was NetFlix > Amazon based mostly on superior interface if you had to choose. This clearly puts Amazon over the top. I really wish they'd clean up their interface.

Hold on...does this mean if you are a Prime member that I can stream all of those HBO titles free, or will I have to pay for each episode/season?

While I doubt they got a cheap deal, Amazon sells GoT for $3.99 per episode. I'm sure part of the sales pitch was "give us a reason for cord cutters to choose Prime and we'll get them to buy the current seasons". NetFlix with its AYCE only model can't make that pitch or have a business model that looks at sales of HBO programs as an offset to the cost of HBO streaming.

Yes. Sort of.

Read the release in the OP. Certain shows like will only have select seasons available that are 3 years or older. I'm sure part of the plan is "I've heard of this HBO show, let me check it out." Then "I liked it and can't wait 3 years to see how it ends, shut up and take my money Amazon."

you will still have to pay for these shows correct? They're not free streams.

Amazon does video 3 ways, rent, buy and prime. If it is designated as Prime Instant Video, then members of Prime get access to it for free.
