Do it in your back yard. Y'all will end up back at your house anyway

You have to build a fire & make s'mores & roast weiners.
Bring:
Flashlights
Board game
Cards to play fish
Pillows & sleeping bags
Bug spray
A book to read to them.

Backyard. No doubt. Last thing you want is that 3 am drive home in the dark. Same experience in the yard (far as kids are concerned) and you have a out if things get bad. I definitely would go in the yard with a 3 year old. Woods may be fine for 5 year old. (I've got two boys. 2 and 5)

Don't stay home. If you've never done it before, head to your nearest state park with availability near restrooms. Bring sleeping bags, stuff to cook on the fire, and maybe a game or two so y'all can play when they get tired of hiking and exploring.
Tell them mom kicked y'all out of the house and bring you some beer for when you put them to bed.
Enjoy the peace. Always a good time.

Back yard is the best option. Get some hot dogs. Beware of smores and marshmellows. They will be hyper and crash. Maybe some, but limit the intake. If you are at home, you can go get things you forget from the house. A trial run is recommended.
