He had to run as a democrat, but he's a conservative and might do the city some good.

I saw this. I ran to the window to see if there was a rainbow over the city. Ray of hope!

Since when is Tony a republican? The runoff was between two Dems.

I think it took electing a racist socialist to wake Jackson up.

First order of business is to hire Priester in a high position and set him up to be the next mayor.

For those outside, almost the entire establishment that ran Detroit into the ground had set up shop in Jackson. The racist socialist mayor that brought them here unexpectedly died in office after seven months.

His 30-year old son, with no experience, who would have been more heavily influenced by the outsiders than even his father won the primary by 10 votes, but did not avoid a runoff. A pastor/city councilman beat him pretty handedly tonight and will be sworn in by Friday, despite a nasty attack over the weekend that appears to have broken several state and federal election laws.

Based on the OP, he switched parties to run for mayor.

Of course, so did C-Ray and that didn't work out too well for New Orleans.

Jackson is way too far gone to be anything of significance again. When 60% plus of your residents are wholly or partially dependent on government aid to exist, then you are in trouble. When you throw in the fact that the money has left town, there really is not way to salvage the town. Moreover, the "leaders" in the town will do everything in their power to sabotage the new mayor.

I agree, but this is the first breath of fresh air in 25 years for Jackson. Has to neutralize his enemies. He got a solid 10 point win, that will help.

My understanding is that approximately 80% of the private businesses in Jackson are owned by whites, while approximately 80% of the population is black.

The Lumumba movement was to essentially run the white business owners out of town, while giving preference to minority owned businesses and contractors. Guess what, when you do that, they move their homes as well - and quit spending money in the city.

Yarber is going to have to be able to appease the vast black majority, while at the same time convincing the white business owners that Jackson is now in stable hands for the foreseeable future.

I am not sure that is tenable...in fact, I highly doubt it.

Jackson is dead and will never rise again. The people who built Jackson and could nurture its future live somewere else now. Just grab a beer and some chips and watch the slide into the sewer continue.
The new mayor will be effective untill about 3 seconds after he tells the fine citizens of Jackson that they have to do somthing to help the city. At that point the clown brigade will show up to let us all know he is a racist and asking blacks folk to work or clean their yards is racist, arresting people for murder is also racist as well as anything that effects any African American or requires them to do anything is racist. These clowns are trying to protect their own power base and could care less about racism but use the charge effectively.
What has happened to Jackson should serve as a view of what happens when you try to tax your way out of debt kinda like Detroit. Eventually the people paying for the party have enough and leave.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of truth in this statement.

Yep, it sucks because the potential was there but Jackson is/has been dead for a while now. 20 years ago it could have been saved but I belive it is waaay to late now.

Jackson has a couple of things going for it. It is the healthcare hub for not only the state, but also east central Louisiana, parts of southeast Arkansas and parts of west central Alabama. However, due to a number of factors, that will begin to trend downwards in short order.

Jackson also still has a high amount of wealth, relatively speaking, centralized in the Metro area. However, as the older money dies off, their offspring are moving to better places that are more friendly to innovation and that are quite frankly, safer.

There are parts of Jackson that are literally as dangerous as any place in North America.
