For me it's Mallard Fillmore. While i agree with the politics of it, the jokes are overdone and the artwork is lazy. It has the ability to be funny at times when it branches out from it's usual humor, but it goes to the Obama well far too often. I swear the guy who does this has about 10-15 stock drawings of Obama/Clinton/Pelosi and just tags on a joke they have already done at least 2-3 times that month already.

A close 2nd is B.C.. The ants and the turtle can be funny at times, but everything else is just boring.

Family Circus.

Everyday I read it, and everyday I say out loud "frick you, Family Circus."

Bunch of unfunny, pretentious little shits of kids.

Prince Valiant was most disappointing. Nothing ever happened.

Many of the longest-running comics are written by the sons of the actual cartoonists, who have no qualifications other than being the creators' sons. Beetle Bailey, Hi & Lois. Hi & Lois doesn't even have artwork I think; they just cut & paste preexisting pictures of the characters in photoshop. Hi & Lois is the most consistently, painfully, unfunny comic I have ever read; an ironclad argument against nepotism.

BC is the same concept, the main guy is dead, and they hired some people to rewrite new "punch lines" while reusing his old drawings.

The only reason any of these comics still exist is that comics are mostly read by elderly people who fear even the slightest change.

Edit: Mallard Fillmore is awful too. This parody from America:the Book was spot on.

Sherman's Lagoon would do better as a Sunday-only strip. There's a huge gap between Sunday and weekday quality.

While i agree that Sherman's Lagoon is great on sundays, it's not a bad weekday comic strip. At least they put some effort into it.

And yes, i completely agree that there is a clear difference in quality between the comic strips written by the original artist's kids and the ones that have effort put into them. The advocate needs to do a overhaul of the comic section and get some new blood in. I lived up in north IL for a few years and got the Northwest Herald and the one strip i miss the most is "Get Fuzzy".

So are most 1 or 2 panel comic strips not named "Frank and Ernest"

While I'm admittedly conservative, how in the hell can you mention Mallard Fillmore and not have Doonesbury in the same breath. At least Fillmore, occasionally, isn't political. Doonesbury is so far left leaning, his strip has been almost invisible for the past administration's term because he doesn't dare badmouth the chosen one.

I know, Poliboard.
