These are really strange times we live in when the National Review and the Wall Street Journal are calling a White Republican a racist while the folks at the NAACP are praising him.

For more than a year, GOP Sen. Rand Paul has been staking out positions on issues that resonate in the black community, including school choice and prison sentencing reform. And he's been showing up in some unexpected — for a Republican — venues, including historically black colleges.
It's stirred an unusual degree of curiosity about the freshman Kentucky senator — and 2016 GOP presidential prospect — among the Democratic Party's most reliable voting bloc.
"He's a different voice in the arena that we don't traditionally hear," says Lorraine Miller, acting head of the NAACP, who expects to invite Paul to speak at the organization's July national conference in Las Vegas.
"He's an engaging guy — that's why we want to talk to him," Miller says. Miller is not the only black leader who has been intrigued by Paul, whose father, former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, had three unsuccessful presidential runs and amassed a fervent Libertarian following.
Miller's predecessor, Benjamin Jealous, has previously hailed Paul's position on reforming drug and sentencing laws, which disproportionately affect African-American individuals and families.

Which is exactly what the republican brand has needed to do for years:
1) actually be conservative, which consists of not butting into people's private lives (mandatory minimums for non-violent drug offenses), and
2) actually going and speaking to people who traditionally don't vote for you because they are pretty much brain washed from birth to vote for the other party.

Paul is doing the correct things to try and break the demo crating strangle hold on the black vote. He is doing what other republicans need to do on more issues, which is listen to the other sides concerns and come up with a reasonable response.

Bravo. I don't know if it will make a difference in this cycle, but the GOP needs inroads into the AA community....like bad.
"Personal responsibility" can sell in the AA community. For every knucklehead you see in the news there are many, many other law abiding citizens who know the AA community is in trouble/needs to embrace responsibility.

Maybe not directly, but definitely indirectly. Here's what the WSJ's Bret Stephens said about Paul:

Rand Paul is prob the only chance the Repubs have to win the WH in 2016 and they will attempt to railroad him.

I never understood why all blacks had to vote en bloc anyway, could you see 90 percent of whites sayiny, TELL ME HOW TO VOTE, I can't think for myself.

The GOP doesn't need to win the Black vote, they just need to get it back to the 30-50% range of the Eisenhower era.

I think even a fairly reliable 15%-18% block would change a lot of elections and impact both major parties significantly.
Not all republicans are uncomfortable with Rand Paul.....that's far from the truth. He has an uphill battle for the nomination, but I think a lot of Paul supporters will be pleasantly surprised over the next couple of years. He has a great shot.
Both parties have their useful idiots. Paul has to figure out how to exploit that faction of the republican base without watering his platform down and he has to navigate the inevitable media gauntlet that will come his way as the front runner for the Republican Party. That will happen regardless of who gets the nomination.

If they were smart, they would focus on the Hispanic vote. It has much more pliability and a greater impact than the black vote.
