Is it possible for an outsider to get a state job with the state of Louisiana? I have applied since January and every app says referred to hiring manager but haven't received the first phone call. Do they have a who do you know type of job placement?

Are you a caveman? If so, you're probably over qualified.

Most say they just want a bachelors degree and I have that and a MPA. Probably am overqualified.

i had close to 200 applicants for the last 3 positions I filled. None were screened due to being overqualified and 2/3 hires were from out of state.

Maybe I don't have the right skills they are needing. Have been trying to get a job with GOHSEP.

What type of position is it? Science, engineering, administrative?

You should look around at other agencies as your MPA is desired in State government. GOHSEP may be a little harder for outsiders due to the security aspect.

It takes months for them to set up an interview. Your best bet may be to email the contact listed on the application.

If you are interested in working for the state, just take the placement exam, I have no idea what it's called at this point (it just changed).

The state takes a while to hire people, and is not the best at keeping applicants informed of where they are in the process. There is a very real possibility they disregarded you because you were overqualified, or probably because you haven't taken the state exam.

Sometimes. Every position is required to be opened, and it does help to know people. That being said, I've seen talent trump years and experience multiple times... not that I would know how any of this works.

Anything in administration but would like to be in GOHSEP. I haven't taken the civil service tests. Every job I apply for does not require it.

They usually take a really long time to get back to you. Also, it always helps if you know people. I know a few people from outside of Louisiana that have state jobs, they are in a specialized field, though.

you seeking a job in a very small niche- I suggest you widen your horizon in the meantime.

Do you have experience in this vocation?

I was a supervisor with GOHSEP. We did not look at scores for any civil service tests in our division. It was not required, therefore not asked for, or considered.
