Mel Kiper offers his opinion on the Saints biggest needs in the upcoming draft

Cornerback: Adding Champ Bailey in free agency sounds like a big help, but Bailey will be 36 by the time this team gets to camp, and the fact that they need him shows the concern they have at cornerback. Jairus Byrd's presence will help in defending the pass, but they really need help at corner.
Wide receiver: Both Lance Moore and Darren Sproles are now elsewhere, and the Saints are relying on younger players such as Kenny Stills and Nick Toon to take another step forward. Brees is another QB who never seems to be affected by what he lacks in the passing game, but they should add someone here.
Outside linebacker: Junior Galette had a big year rushing the passer in 2013 with 12.0 sacks, but they could use another option on the edge.
Offensive tackle: Terron Armstead stepped in at the end of last season and didn't look bad at left tackle, but depth at tackle behind him and re-signed Zach Strief is a question mark.

That, and how do you have OT and not C on there? We have one right now.

Why doesn't he have people who actually follow the team?

I've sent my resume. Nuttin.

I feel like we've been talking about this draft for decades.
I just want it to end.

We've been waiting SO long that the team has already picked up the 5th year option on our first round pick, amirite?
Posted on 4/21/14 at 9:19 pm to Patrick O Rly
That would happen regardless.

That's about right.
You could say ILB, but it's technically not a need. We have two starters on contract. But yes, we could certainly use some young talent

Mel Kiper's opinion totally contradicts his draft picks for us.

Anyone else read this in Mel's voice?

I think everyone has forgotten about butler but he will make a statement this year.

Not everyone. I remembered.

I will be furious if we trade out of the first just because it means another day of not knowing.

quote:Disagree. We signed him because he was a really good deal for a future hall of famer that is one injury season past a really good 2012. Dude can still ball(even if not at that shutdown level) and can mentor our youngins on top of that.
Champ Bailey...the fact that they need him
That said, I do think adding a corner would be smart because Bailey and White only have 2 years left, and this is Robinson's last year. And then add in the fact the rookie would get 2 years to learn under Bailey.
Injuries and inconsistency haven't given us a clear picture on Robinson, White hasn't shown enough to be a reliable outside corner(though he is a perfect nickel prototype), and Bailey isn't getting younger.
quote:If we're including non WRs in the WR discussion then add in the fact that we still have Thomas, Graham, and Watson and we have other backs that have shown they can catch out of the backfield but haven't had many chances.
Wide receiver: ...Darren Sproles
That said I think adding a receiver would be smart because while I disagree with many saying Colston is done, I cannot deny that he is getting older. Stills is poised to breakout but behind those two we have one vet and 3 young guys with potential but not much in the way of production.
quote:I don't care what he was called and we did not run a 3-4 base last year(we actually ran more 4-3). Galette was a DE and we didn't use OLBs to rush the passer consistently like these experts think.
Outside linebacker: Junior Galette
That said, at OLB we have Butler and Haralson who both can get to the QB(it's actually Butler's specialty). And Dawson looked pretty good in limited play too.
But again I agree that it is a position we should look at in the draft. Butler, Haralson, and Dawson are all UFAs next year. That would leave us with Knox and maybe Johnson(he seems to be more of a DE or pure pass rush OLB though) as our OLBs.
quote:Hell if one of our top needs is depth then we are doing great right? Disagree here again. We have one legit depth guy in Harris and if it ever clicks for Jones he could be a wall.
Offensive tackle: ...depth at tackle
Now I'm not against taking a tackle, but only if they also view him as someone who could also play guard and potentially replace Grubbs. That way you have depth at tackle and guard and someone that could potentially start one day.
quote:These would be bigger needs than OLB(unless he is a pass coverage guy first) and OT.
Center and Inside Linebacker?
We are extremely green at C and are getting older, slower, and more expensive at ILB.
Hell I'd go as far as to say DE and DT are higher than OLB and OT because in two years almost everyone will be a FA.
TLDR:
Once again I completely disagree with these "experts" reasoning, even if I do agree with some of the needs.
