I know this should be on the outdoor board but I was hoping it would get more hits here. last year I (and a group of friends) went on the buffalo in northern Arkansas. had a good time but this year we are going to buy our own kayaks. Anyone know of any good rivers in the south east ?

Where are you located, and how far are you willing to drive?

It's back in north Arkansas.....but the Spring River

I've never left there without some part of me being bloody. Mainly my shins and legs. You can stay in Hardy.

It should be really flowing right now with all the rain everyone has been getting.

Floating or paddling the Escatwaba river either in Alabama or in southern mississippi is hard to beat

We'd be going in mid June and leaving from monroe. So anything within 5-8 hours would be nice

Are you looking for something nice and flat near the coast, or something a bit more mountainous?

Sorry for the many questions, just trying to think of the best fit for you. Personally, I like kayaking in the mountains more than the coast, but that's not for everybody.

I would definitely recommend going down the Paint Rock River in Jackson County, Alabama. It runs right by the Walls of Jericho, which are truly magnificent and awe-inspiring. Getting the kayaks up there is a little difficult (not a solo job, by any means), but worth the effort.

If you are willing to travel a bit further east, there are numerous opportunities for camping/kayaking in the various Appalachian chains, but it may be a bit far for you.

Any shuttle services for that river? And is the water murky or clearing? Thanks

Not to my knowledge, it's in the middle of bumfrick for the most part.

Clear, it's pretty quick too. There might be a few sections where it approaches Class 1 rapids, but I can't recall, it has been a while.

Beautiful bayou Desiard is in your backyard there is Monroe and you wouldn't have to travel. You can camp out on the beach by the infirmary.

I would think the Ocoee is better for more experienced kayakers.

I love the Ocoee, but if you aren't a proficient kayaker, you could get killed in some of the sections. I'm pretty sure you hit class 4 within a hundred feet of the drop-in point.

Locals will tell you privately about occasional nudity and public sex. You'll also hear hints -- but little more -- about a "Miss Viagra Fest," an informal topless dance contest on the river. The weekend party on the Spring River looks more like spring break in Daytona than a cool float in the Natural State.

quote:

Rollin' On the River The Spring River begins as a sleepy creek north of Thayer, Missouri, just across the Arkansas line. The world's 10th-largest spring, Mammoth Spring, pumps more than nine million gallons of 58-degree water every hour into the stream year-round. When dust-dry summer weather transforms other float streams into rocky puddles, the big, reliable water source makes the Spring River an easily floatable stream.

But many boaters lose control of their canoes here, and some find themselves in serious jeopardy. "They call that Dead Man's Curve," says Jeff Klein. "To me, that is the number one trouble spot on the river. A lot goes on there that probably shouldn't." A young woman falls from a canoe, disappears underwater in the current for a moment, then washes into a cluster of rocks where her foot becomes trapped. "My foot! My foot!" she screams in the fast, waist-high water. Bystanders help free her. She is in pain, but appears uninjured except for bruises and scratches.

quote:

"My leg!" she howls, her face contorted with pain. "My leg!" Bystanders eventually free her, but by then she is unable to walk. Other canoeists and residents carry her off in a beach chair, planning to take her to a hospital. At least two other boaters that day exhibit blood- gushing cuts on their feet.

Completely off-topic, but you seem like a knowledgable fellow.

How are the land prices in the Ozarks, and is the soil any good?

Okatoma river in Hattiesburg is pretty cool. There are a couple of outfitters who can bring you upstream. There's actually a few rapids (not much, but the only place in miss-La with them). Camp out on point bars.

Yeah, I suppose that could be a problem. Only a few people die on it every five years or so. Regardless, it's a great ride so go with a guide service.
