NYT article

quote:

“African-American female soldiers were involved in the process of developing the new female hair standards,” said Lt. Col. Alayne P. Conway, an Army spokeswoman. “Not only were nearly 200 senior female leaders and soldiers, which included a representative sample of the Army’s populations, part of the decision-making process on the female hair standards, but the group was also led by an African-American female.”

I foresee the DOD / SECDEF caving on this one.

In reaction to a new Army regulation banning numerous hairstyles — twists, dreadlocks and large cornrows — popular with black women, the 16 women of the Congressional Black Caucus have asked Mr. Hagel to overturn the regulation on behalf of the 26,700 African-American women on active duty in the Army. The regulation comes at the same time as a new Army rule banning tattoos on the face, neck, hands, fingers and lower arms of recruits.

I'm sorry but to suggest that you should be able to have dreds or twists (I assume these require a fair amount of maintenance - plus the styles are potentially dangerous in combat or daily activities) is asinine. There is a reason military men don't have any hair. Jesus!

Which is why I foresee a shite-storm by the CBC and such ... and eventually DOD caving due to card being played.

It has nothing to do with practicality or safety, it is only about getting attention (for the politicians) and special treatment.

I think this should be the standard for women in the military as well.

If guys have to shave their heads when they join the military, women should too. Equality, right?

OK, I know this is going to sound crazy but bear with me.

Why don't we establish standards regardless of race or sex that are congruent with the requirements of the job they perform? Errbody has to pass standard physical/mental tests.

There are certain people doing most of the complaining. We should ask them your question.

No reason for multiple standards. Just have one single solitary standard. If you cut the mustard, you're in. If not, AMF.

If a young Aleut Native American became a 4 star, nobody in the ranks could say he got their unfairly. No "good old boy system," or "affirmative action baby" or "they needed a woman" stuff.
