looking to jump off Sprint and go to Verizon with the Galaxy S5. Wife has an iphone and will be a bit disappointed if I make her switch and the new iphone comes out in Sept. Is the edge plan the way to go to be able to update her phone in a few months or is it essentially financing a smart phone?

I just heard an elevator pitch on it, so I don't know much.

To me, it sounded like leasing a car. If you like phones for the short term, and you are constantly changing phones, go Edge.

If you keep a phone for +2 years, and the newest thing doesn't matter to you, stick with traditional 2YR plans.

I did the plan with AT&T. At 12 months, I can change to the newest technology. I'm cool with that, and AT&T service is pretty good. I'd give Verizon a slight edge over AT&T for service, but only by a whisker.

I know the ATT version of the plan is a terrible deal.

From what I understandis you have to keep the phone on that plan atleast one year. You pay the edge fee each month (say $25, depending on phone) plus your line charge, plus your data charge. The only incentive I see is that you get $10 off your line charge each month and no 2 year contract. Without the edge and on a normal 2 year contract, you buy the phone at the discounted price up front as opposed to the monthly edge, and only pay your line charge and data plan. I'd advise against it if you keep phones about 2 years.

My uncle is convinced he made the right call, I still don't really know what is right or wrong. He did the edge got the S5 and is paying only $4 a month more on his bill. I guess they discounted his line and even with the edge payment its only $4 more then what he was paying.

2 year plan you pay $199 or whatever the price is and own the phone, edge or similar, you pay more and dont keep the phone. Example - just 2 days ago my gf upgraded to a nokia 1020. $99 for the phone with 2 year agreement, att Next for 12 months at $30 a month. thats $360 to rent a phone vs $99 to keep it. Those plans are for nimrods that like blowing cash.

That is not correct.

On the AT&T plan (I opted for the 12 month), at 12 months I can trade it in for another phone and it starts another cycle. However, at 20 months, I own the phone outright and can stop paying the monthly fee for the phone. It's my choice. In the meantime, I get a reduced rate on the service.

which part is incorrect? You keep the phone if you pay full price. if its a $700 phone, you own it when you pay the $700, which they break up into 20 payments. On the other hand, i pay $99 and keep the phone. No brainer. What reduced rate? I just had this discussion in the att store friday night. 10gb shared plan is 100, smartphone access $15 per line. Our plan would be the same price regardless of contract type. Next would have simply added the phone payment. Not close to a deal.

You obviously think that the Next plan is a rent-a-phone plan and that your plan is cheaper. It is not. You will pay more for service than I will pay for service. That additional amount you pay for service covers the overall cost of the phone. Even if you got the phone at ZERO cost, the service you pay for will include the cost of the phone spread out over the two years of your contract.

I will pay less for service but more for the phone.

It ends up being about the same cost either way, except that I have an option you don't. I can dump the phone at 12 months and you can't.

This might explain it, unless you just can't understand the math.

FYI, i got a 2 year contract, and im paying $15 per line not $40. Same as you, without monthly phone payments. I get my phone for 99, pay the same monthly payment. You pay 600...or pay 300 and trade it in and NEVER own it. Thanks and please drive through.
