Forgive me, oh wise Rantards, if this has been previously discussed, but I searched The Rant and found barely anything related to this topic.

From the moment I found out LSU was playing at Reliant (NRG) Stadium, I wondered if they would relax their "FOUR-HOUR-RULE" which has been in place, I think, as long as the NFL's Texans have been around. The gates to Reliant Park are closed until four hours before kickoff. I've visited friends who tailgate for Texans' games and many of them dislike this rule. But they are NFL tailgaters, a far tamer breed of pre-gamer than CFB tailgaters. And of course, not even remotely comparable to the LSU tailgater [tigris maximus partaay].

Obviously, a four hour rule equates to less-than three hours of tailgating, when you factor-in the time to park, set-up, and then the securing of items and the walk into the stadium. I think most of y'all would agree that for a Saturday game, the opener of college football, on Labor Day weekend, in a fun, dynamic city like Houston... that under three hours of tailgating is laughable for LSU fans (and probably even for the beer-brat-toting Badger fans also). And for an 8pm kickoff, that means that tailgating won't begin until ~4:30pm (for those of y'all that find a parking spot quickly and set-up fast). I'm thinking many of y'all are expecting to be tapping the SECOND (or third) keg by 4pm, NOT being allowed in the gates at 4pm.

But Reliant/NRG seems to disagree with your plans. I can also tell you that driving on I-610 (South Loop) before 8am on Sundays, there are LONG lines of cars on the feeder road awaiting the opening of those gates, and their chance to get to the prime tailgating spots (for noon NFL kickoffs).

Ok, so does this rule apply to non-NFL games at Reliant Stadium? Good question...
AdvoCare Texas Kickoff Tailgating Policy
"All Parking lots (unless otherwise noted) will open four hours prior to kickoff"

Ok, seems cut and dry, right? Or is that "unless otherwise noted" an important caveat?

oops... I posted too early...

What to do?? I don't know, but perhaps if enough of us send polite (or griping/demanding) e-mails and make lots of phone calls... to the right people... maybe NRG/Reliant can relax the rule? I don't know. But good idea!!!

It was the same way last year in Dallas. People got out there at 8 am and parked outside the parking lot and set up their tents. When they opened the lots, people parked, and went back to tailgating.

Hey, but what about last year's version of this game at Reliant (Cowboys vs. Bulldogs)? Great question! I posted on the Oklahoma State and Mississippi State forums back in March and got a few good responses:

OSU Forum
MSU Forum

Including, unfortunately:

"Yeah we had to park outside the gates and wait until 4 hours before kick-off to get in..."

and

"It was a pain in the butt. Had to sit in a line of cars and wait for them to open the gate..."

A. The Reliant staium area isn't a college campus

B. It's their place and their rules. If you don't like it, don't go to the game.

C. What benefit would the people putting on the game get by allowing increased tailgating hours other than the added costs of increased security, extended hours for the facility personnel, and additional clean up crews?

D. The people putting on this game don't give a shite at all if you tailgate or not. They are getting their money from sponsorships, ticket sales, concessions, and that 47th LSU t-shirt you just "had to have."

THe stadium was built to play the footbal game and the parking lot was built to hold the cars of the people who attend the game

Good thing Lsu doesn't count on you to boost the game day atmosphere

I've been known to sling back a few O'douls before kickoff. Gotta stay fresh for the game. Never know when I will have to report some fan for using profane language or standing during the game

Believe me, the only gameday atmosphere LSU cares about is if you bought the ticket and are in the seat at gametime. They couldn't care less if you tailgate 2 hours before the game in the parking lot, 12 hours before the game right outside the gates, or not at all.

The point I'm trying to make is Lsu is number one sporting event in the country partly because of the tailgating/atmosphere

Are you certain about 2011? My recollection was that I arrived about five hours before that Oregon kickoff and met up with a few tailgaters there (including one who made duck gumbo). They had all been set-up there since the morning (none of these were RVs, btw).

I skipped 2013-TCU, so I have no knowledge.

And all the SEC Championships, and LSU-UNC at Georgia Dome, folks tailgated ALL-DAY on-site.

I'm sure a lot of the oil and gas companies will be setting up tailgates to entertain clients in town for the game. Seems like they will want a little better return on their investment than 4hrs.

Actually that year there were enough of us lined up and we eventually pressured the attendants (or somebody threw him a wad of cash) to open our lot around 9:30 a.m....still a late start but better than the 12 or 1 p.m. rule they had originally.
