Anyway, with that aside, let’s look at something less nuanced and far, far dumber. It’s Tom Boswell of the Washington Post going off on Harper about this in his latest column. After several paragraphs of ripping Harper and lauding Matt Williams for sending Harper a message, Boswell uncorks this:

Can we get a grip? Counting their three top starting pitchers, Harper may be the Nats’ seventh-best player. If forced to choose whether Harper or Anthony Rendon would have the better career, I’d think twice. Harper is in a self-conscious, fierce scowl-off with baseball. Rendon dances with it and grins. Baseball loves relaxed.

Well I know I don't agree with this, I think Harper is one of the better young players in the game and only going to get better

Way to live up to your own words, Mr. Boswell.

I agree, but with the expectations placed on him from the start it was almost a given that he'd struggle.

I don't love Harper and think he's kind of a douche but I kind of feel bad for him at the same time. People jump all over him for the dumbest shite. I mean he's not really even struggling that much (292/352/415). The power will come

It already has. He hit two home runs on Opening Day last year as a 20-year-old, and 22 and 20 his first two seasons in the majors ... Pretty good.

Yeah, what does Thomas Boswell know about baseball?

I think he's wrong here, and I think he's way past his sell by date, but Boswell is an f'n legend. He's one of the greatest baseball writers of all time. Let him be wrong in his old age, but he's no idiot.

Read the column - the whole thing. And then think about the previous two seasons and what the Nats have accomplished (or haven't to be more precise).

What did Boswell write that wasn't spot on?

Boswell didn't state (or even suggest) that Harper lacks potential. He simply pointed out the truth: Harper's well-crafted off-the-field brand is well ahead of his on-the-field accomplishments.

If Harper understands this FACT, then he's got plenty of potential to correct the imbalance. If he doesn't, then he's already well on his way to being yet another forgettable Diva who racks up attention and money but little else.

The seventh best player thing is certainly wrong

They also made the playoffs for the first time since
1981 (including the Expos history)

I read the whole thing. Harper and Desmond have been their two best players since he's been up. the team not winning the World Series isn't his fault. that's ridiculous.
