Would you offer to help somebody at the gym with their technique?

I'm talking about swimming laps and this guy was struggling with obviously no swimming training. I wanted to give him a few pointers but didn't want to impose.

If he's like under 12, yes. If he's an adult, then don't be a douchebag.

meh I never do

it's actually semi entertaining in the gym when someone looks like an idiot, a pool though is entirely different and actually pretty dangerous

If I saw someone struggling with anything I would help them, its the right thing to do.

I have maybe two or three times

To people who look like they are going to throw their back out doing deadlifts or going to kill themselves doing powercleans.

That's kind of what I thought too. Just let him struggle and enjoy the show.

As someone who recently was having trouble swimming because I don't know how to breathe or do the strokes properly I wish someone would have helped me.

Dude he can stand up anytime. It's not like he's swimming the English Chanel and improper techniqe is fatal.

If I didn't know them, no. I swam year round for a couple of years growing up, so I wouldn't mind if someone requested, but honestly, if someone's not about to hurt themselves, I don't think that it's my business. I think you did the right thing.

I never offer unsolicited advice at the gym.

If I asked you to pick up the soap I dropped in the shower, would you?

Who the frick cares how he swims. As long as he doesn't drown then he's fine.

Well no shite....its still the nice thing to do! I mean if I saw someone struggling with their groceries or something and I had a free hand I would offer to help, even though they probably wouldn't die without my assistance.

Yea I've said a couple things to regulars before when they're doing awful deadlifts or squats. I wouldn't do it to some random person, but a guy that you see everyday and he knows you're not being a doucebag, I'd say something to keep him from hurting himself.

There's one guy at our gym who is decently strong in the upper body, but I don't think anyone has ever shown him a thing about working out his lower body. He was:

1. Squatting using the Smith Machine (mistake number one)

2. Had his feet directly beneath him (mistake number two if using a Smith Machine)

3. Had his heels so close together they were almost touching

When he would squat he would come so far up on his toes and his knees would come so far forward I thought for sure he was going to blowout his entire lower body.

I just showed him a couple quick pointers about shifting his feet forward so he could sit into the squat and drive through his hips and he was really thankful. Some will be pricks about it, some won't.

Since my gym only has individual showers, I'd say if we were at the point of being able to pick up one another's soap we were past the game playing point of our relationship.
