No soda for you!

quote:

According to a hospital spokesperson, signs are posted in the cafeteria informing patrons that refills aren't free. Lewis says he never noticed the signs and admits he had refilled his drink without paying on other occasions. He says after he went back for seconds on Wednesday, a man who identified himself as the chief of police, stopped him. "As I was filling my cup up, I turned to walk off and a fella grabbed me by the arm and asked me was I going to pay for that, and I told him I wasn't aware that I had to pay for that." Lewis says he tried to pay the $0.89 right there, but wasn't allowed to. He says he wasn't given the chance to pay the cashier either. "I never had an option to make right what I had done wrong." He says he was taken to a room, given the $525 ticket for shoplifting and told not to return to the property. "I'm done there, at the VA hospital. I'm not allowed to go on the premises anymore.

as i posted in the other thread on the OT, that he is banned from the premises and lost his job as a result is far worse than a ticket for $525 that may still end up getting reduced by a judge.

I have always assumed that if the soda fountain is self-serve, refills are free.

Is he a vet that gets his medical care from the VA? I don't see how they can deny him access.

Very confusing. Was the officer a fed or indeed the chief of police? How do hospital officials rescind the fine if it was written by law enforcement?

Can't say because I don't know if he was lying or not, but that's not the point. The unworldly overreach for the infraction is the issue.

if you come on down to the big city, some places will put up signs saying no free refills. lesson learned here - be mindful of the signs.

much like a host of other infractions that would normally be let slide, this guy seems to be the lucky one getting made an example of. id guess, barring the judge being crazy, this will end up something less than $500 for stealing federal property and thats just the ticket that was initially issues.

edit: i see now that the update is the judge let it slide.

Officials with the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston say a North Charleston man who was initially federally charged with a $525 fine for an $.89 drink refill will instead be given a warning.

Lewis and his fiancé have contacted the Internal Affairs Office in Columbia. He says he will contest the fine in federal court.

Now which is it?

All the guy had to do was put on his hard hat and tell the police he was a member of the Village People and the cop would have had to let him go.

The VA has a long and storied history of not being the brightest bulb in the pack. In the early 80's Viet Nam vets were treated like so much shite that many vets went postal in the offices.

Government is always overreactive and dumb.

If MSNBC ever gets the axe, it will be because of unintelligent viewers.

The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is fortunate to have a highly trained Federal police force to ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and employees. As Federal police they are responsible for enforcing the law.

I'm working at the VA and its the worst. Its so hard to get anything done and it literally takes an act of congress to replace inept employees.

Theres a running joke among some of the residents around here: Whats the difference between a bullet and a VA nurse? A bullet can only kill one person at a time, you can fire a bullet, and a bullet can draw blood.
