i have planted before with success but not in a few years. I think im going to do it again this year. When do you normally plant and what?

Same question for mineral, what do you use. I normally just put mineral blocks and rocks in a hole with grape koolaid but i may try a mixture this year. What have you used with success

We have a couple mineral sites. One in particular they hit hard almost yuear round. It has the generic "Deer Cocaine" mix in it.

Never have done summer plots, did plant some rye over a few plots that were extremely bare this spring though. Mainly to keep some ground cover and maybe choke out a few weeds.

We normally plant ours in May. We have been planting a mix of soybeans and sunn hemp in most of the fields and milo in another.

Last year I planted some sun hemp to put nitrogen back in the soil. The deer absolutly loved it and I was able to plant my ryegrass for grazing without having to add nitrogen. I saw it in this thread researched it and planted in the middle of may. Props to itsmemc it exceeded my expectations.

We maintain a few very small plots with clover blends. It takes the heat of the summer and stays throughout the winter. It gets bush hogged and fertilized twice a year.

As for as minerals go we feed protein pellets in gravity feeders January - September to help during antler growing and birthing season. We also keep mineral blocks out all year long (whatever is available at local store).

I would still be planting it, but we have unlimited access to peanut seed now. will follow the peanuts with a fall mix.

I hear deer like em and they are packed with protein obviously. Are the deer topping the plants as well?

Deer eat the hell out of a peanut plant, they'll take a leaf over a blade of grass any day. And, for a double bonus it's round up ready. If I had to buy something it would be sun-hemp with CIP, maybe a little lab lab on the edges.

50 pound bags of salt, for each spot, with 1/4 of a bag of cattle mineral mixed into it. Salt is great but you'll be doing the deer a better service by adding the other stuff.

This is a great resource lecture on minerals.

I'd like to plant something that will attract both deer and hogs.

I'm not picky, I just want meat for the table.

I am going to plant some with peas, sunflowers, soybeans and clover. I have reading up on this recently and you really need to enclose the plot to give it a head start or it will be a futile attempt. I read where one guy used t posts and 30# mono. He put about 3-4 strands around the plot and it keeps them out.

This helped me. LINK

20# Iron-clay cowpeas
10# Quail Haven re-seeding soybeans
6# Lablab
5# Peredovik sunflowers
Approximate price per acre: $69;

This will be our first year. We are going to plant some forage soybeans made by eagle seeds and see how it does. I need to put some mineral blocks as well.

Sesame will attract more doves and is very drought tolerant. It was unbelievable how the doves came to it last season.
