Did snapper season open Monday like we thought was going to happen?

Snapper season is open in Louisiana waters. The La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries has the following posted on its website:

quote:

Recreational Red Snapper – Currently Open. Currently open in state waters and closed in federal waters. State waters only season is open daily. Daily bag limit in state waters during the state waters red snapper season is 2 fish per person at a 16 inch minimum length. As our department continues to fight the battle for regional management of our fisheries, regulations may have the potential to change throughout the season. We urge anglers to visit this webpage or our online fishing regulations pamphlet prior to your trip to ensure you are compliant.

However, one major issue is the dispute as to whether state waters extend three miles out or "three marine leagues." The state says its boundary extends three marine leagues, which is nine geographic miles or 10.357 statute miles. The feds disagree in regard to regulation of the fishery.

There aren't many good snapper within three miles of shore. You have to go into the disputed zone to fish.

And for the record, I would NEVER land an illegal snapper.

Tut, I wish our legislatures in AL would grow a pair and open the AL waters and fight for our State Waters to be extended to the 9m like our border states.

I have plenty of spots within 9 miles that I can catch a nice eating grade (6#-12#) snapper. Have a few within the current 3 mile boundary. Although those do not have a very good grade of fish, most are in the 12" to 18" range , still can catch a legal limit.

This whole situation sucks and is a big reason we sold our 31Jupiter a few years back and haven't replaced it with another offshore fishing boat. Have a 19' bay boat for inshore, spear fishing and cruising the islands.

I didn't get to go personally this week, but my camp partner caught 4 limits before the front made things rough. This was out of venice. Will be out there tomorrow and Saturday.
