Road trip from Lake Charles to west Texas
Posted by colorchangintiger on 4/16/14 at 10:35 am00
Ok F&D Board, I'm getting up really early friday morning and driving out to west Texas. I'll be about 1-2 hours west of Houston (either on I-10 or 290) when it's time for breakfast and around San Angelo for lunch. I don't mind tailoring my route around meals, as long as the meal is worth it. What are your recs?

Thanks for the rec, but I'll be 200 miles northwest of Luling when it's time for lunch.

G'luck then. San Angelo isn't exactly a foodie's paradise.
If you are near Llano at lunch, there's a Cooper's BBQ.

San Angelo-Cork & Pig Tavern, Zero One, or Peasant Village
1-2 hrs outside of Houston? Dunno, sounds like you'll be anywhere from Sealy to Schulenburg if you're on 10. Pull off somewhere in between or wait until you get to Luling and have breakfast at the jerky counter at Buc-ee's.

First....I'd just do 10 to San Antonio and then up if you are going to San Angelo. 290 through Austin can be messy.
If you take 10, stop in Schulenberg and get some Kolaches and coffee LINK
Another option is just off the interstate a couple of miles, but absolutely some of the best kolaches I've ever had! Hruskas! LINK
Or if you can wait til Luling, just stop at Bucees, they have the best restrooms anywhere and they have some pretty good breakfast food...kolaches, taquitos, etc.

Franks, on the south side of I-10 (pretty sure it's the Schulenberg exit), has a great breakfast.
I've eaten there several times after hunting trips.

Coopers may not have as good BBQ as Luling, but that's a damn good experience. I went there last summer with a buddy. The cook opened up the pit and we chose what we wanted. Ended up getting $50 worth of meats and sides and ate it all along iinto a food coma, along with white bread and raw onions, on picnic tables. Definitely recommend. But might not be where mr. Early bird OP is going

It's our tradition to hit Cooper's up on the drive back.

I have driven from BR to far southeastern New Mexico in a day and every bit of me hurt by the time I stopped.
