"This note is to alert you folks that I know that I do not know whether or not my tax returns are accurate...."

This is what frustrates me the most. I don't mind paying taxes but I really have no clue if I'm paying the right amount.

There is no "right" amount. There is the minimum allowed by law, and then there is anything more. Both are acceptable to the IRS. Determining the minimum allowed by law is a complex task because of the complexity of our tax code. Each taxpayer's unique facts and circumstances may result in different applications of the same provisions of the laws, regulations, court decisions or other rulings. That is what keeps me in business.

That is awesome.

I wonder if the administration will direct the IRS to audit Mr. Rumsfeld... you know... just to make sure his returns are accurate.

In my opinion this is a very smart way to look at things, this is basically the Johari's Window technique that is used widely in strategic business offices and it is essential to use in a SWAT analysis. People make fun of Rums for this in my opinion because they are either dumb, or they have never thought on a strategic level. They do not know that it is important to analysis intelligence through different lenses, and because of that they are not able to exploit their advantages nor can they fully cover their butts to risks.

That being said, I gave a full faith effort on my Taxes and God only know if it is 100% correct.

Keeps my dad in business as well. He wants the tax code as hard as possible, so as few folks as possible can do their own taxes. Not really. But yes, really.

I'd love to see a National Sales Tax.

• If you have it, you spend it, you get taxed.
• If you don't have it, you don't spend it, you don't get taxed.

It is probably one of the most self aware statements made by someone in politics. But in a sound byte driven media culture/ short as shite attention span consumption culture it is easy to realize why people thought to mock the statement.

Well, I think the point is that in many cases, one cannot even be 100% certain they've achieved the minimum.

A Rummy press conference reminded me of a lion tamer holding a chair and a whip keeping the press corps in their cage.

Similar to this.

You're wrong. A "flat tax" means nothing more than using some common percentage against income.

It's the measurement of income that's complicated.

A flat tax would not dismantle the IRS and would not harm CPA's business. A national sales tax, would, however.

Rex is dead on with this. the concept of a marginal rate is not that hard; taxing certain levels of income at differing rates just requires basic math no harder than taxking at, say, a 25% rate for all taxable income. It's coming up with what the "taxable income" is that is problematic. Therefore, I am pretty much agnostic when it comes to a "flat tax," but I am fully in favor of something like the 1986 (?) simplification of the tax code. I would be in favor of a national sales tax in lieu of the income tax, but there is no way we could trust our government not to hit us with both.

National sales tax is the easiest and fairest way to go. Rummy is right. The current tax code is too complex and complicated.

If I took my tax info to 3 different preparers/tax accountants, I'm sure I would get 3 different figures. That is ridiculous.

I will support any politician (R, D, L, etc.) who makes a national sales tax (or other reasonable tax reform) a priority.

If you did away with all exemptions, politicians would lose an important tool with which to pay back their contributors. Will never happen.
