How is he defensively?

He will be playing corner OF in the majors. He'll be fine from a defensive standpoint.

Typically, yes. But if the league, keeper slots, and/or bench spots are shallow, the likelihood of keeping and drafting prospects are lessened. More established players are drafted which in turns could lead to a more competitive league.

re: Springer just got the call

Springer's contact rate is atrocious. He has a high walk rate which tells me he can identify hittable pitches. But his contact rate tells me he is swinging and missing hittable pitches. You aren't going to find anyone in major league baseball with a 65% contact rate and a .250 batting avg. The pitchers are just too good in the majors.

A lot of people are pulling crazy #'s out of their ass. But if you look at the underlying stats of Springer he's basically Justin Maxwell with more speed. Maxwell has a 65% contact rate and a .227 major league average. I think best case scenario is you are getting a cameron type player. .240-.250 average 20 homers.. and 20+ steals. But his floor is being sent back to AAA and learn not how to K at a historic rate.

If his OBP is above .330 and he slugs .500, I'm not sure anyone will care what his BA is. For a non-fantasy perspective, there's plenty of logic to your statement. From a fantasy perspective, no one really cares as long as the counting stats are there.

any concern over his poor spring training? he hit like .140

I have a ton of concern.. being able to hit AAA crap pitching and hitting major league pitchers is a whole different story. His K rate scares me and I think he'll be hard pressed to stay in the majors this year.

Even if he hits well.. his counting stats are going to suck. Houston's offense is historically bad. No one to drive in and no one to drive him in.

But that being said, his walk rate and his speed should stop him from being a total bust.

I am seeing these crazy #'s being thrown out.. I just don't see it. No one in major league history has had a contact rate that low and been anything more then a crappy arse player. If he succeeds with that K rate it will be historic. Do you really think Springer is a transcendent player.

But I will say he's a roster able player. His speed and walk rate will give him some value and speed translates well from the minors to the major league level. But don't expect the second coming of Mike Trout. There is a reason why every major scouting service had him outside of the top 10 prospect in major league baseball.

He's not Gregory Polanco at the plate, we know this. But his combination of power/speed combined with his OBP% makes him fantasy relevant, and an asset to a professional team.

re: Springer just got the call

Barely outside the top ten which is hardly a knock on him. I don't think anyone expects him to be the next Mike Trout either. But I think one would be blinded if they couldn't see a Kemp-like ceiling for him. Will he ever get there is a whole different discussion. One which you make very compelling points against.

One can be on a crappy team and still put up good counting stats.

re: Springer just got the call

You are confusing real life with fantasy. Striking out and making contact aren't stats in fantasy.

Guys like Chris Davis, Jay Bruce, Justin Upton, Josh Hamilton, Carlos Gomez, Stanton etc strike out close to 30% of the time historically. Guess what? Their contact rates also usually hover between 65-70%.

Springer's power/speed combo will make him an elite fantasy player. The RBI and R won't be there right away since the lineup is terrible. But the guy is a .300 hitter in the minors. Can you show me a .300 minor league hitter with over 1,200+ appearances who hit .240 in the MLB?

re: Springer just got the call

Justin Upton 74% contact rate
Josh Hamilton 81% contact rate
Carlos Gomez 75% contact rate
Giancarlo Stanton 67% contact rate

Springer has a 65% contact rate in the minors facing crappy arse pitching. My main concern is now he'll be facing Verlander, Scherzer and Sanchez. Can he maintain a 65% contact rate in the majors.

But I agree with you about him hitting the ball in the minors with a low contact rate. It's hard to compare Springer because statistics show that you can't have a low contact rate and a high BA. Is Springer an anomaly?

If he's available in your league, by all means grab him. His upside is tantalizing and his floor is still useful. I personally think he's going to produce a Mike Cameron type year with a little more speed. Getting someone like that off the WW is without a doubt a good thing.

It would not be a fantasy baseball thread without Mwg pimping Gregory Polanco.

re: Springer just got the call

There's no doubt he'll have his struggles. I definitely overshot his r, RBI and avg. those will come as the team improves and he matured.

BA isn't a big deal for me (leagues should be OPS by now anyway). A guy like Jose Abreu is hitting 240 but has 4 bombs and 15 RBI

For springer I care about OBP, which will translate to SBs. He walks so that's good. And he will run into HRs.

re: Springer just got the call

There have been much better prospects that have failed. If he's able to hit for any type of average with a 65% contact rate, then he'll be the first player ever to do that. It's more likely his contact rate takes a dip because he's going to be facing better compeition. BJ Upton had a 61% contact rate last year and hit .184. Are the Astro's going to let him stay in the majors with a .184 average.

The only way he becomes a elite fantasy player is if he's a transcenant player. Meaning he's going to have to do something that's never been done before. There have been millions of at bats in major league baseball, and George Springer is all the sudden going to buck the trend. I think he's more BJ Upton then Mike Trout.

That being said if he's available you grab him. He has trade value. His ceiling is unmistakable. But he's not without risk. If you are in a FA league where you grab him at no costs there is no risk. If you are using FAAB then there is a huge risk in bidding top dollar for him.
