I am headed down to Surfside TX this weekend with family and will be fishing the surf, possibly the jetty, and doing some crabbing. I am hoping the report of crabs being in in LA bodes well for Surfside also.

I watched a couple of videos on building your own suction pump and plan on building a couple for my boys.

This video was particularly good. LINK

Any suggestions on fishing and or crabbing the surf are welcome. We went down there last June and had good luck catching crabs in the bays and ditches with crab lines and dip nets but no luck in the surf or on the jetties.

Also suggestions for targeting flounder?

That pump he made would make a pretty decent potato shooter.

Crabbing the surf, they don't show up till July. Would do much better in marsh inland.

I used one last fall in Gulf Shores, pumping Ghost Shrimp and fishing the surf for Pompano. Takes a little practice, but was definitely the preferred bait.

Just thinking about it makes me wish for fresh Pomp.

I used to dip net freshwater ghost shrimp and to feed aquarium fish.

three crustaceans named ghost shrimp. I am talking about the ones that live in the tidal zone in the sand. they look like this:

sometimes they are called yabbys

I grew up fishing for bream with those freshwater glass shrimp. BEST BAIT EVER for bream.

I used to do it right off our dock in Anacoco Lake.

Instead of scrapping the bottom like you would do for crawfish, just run a dip net through grass and weeds (mid level of the water column). Start pulling the weeds out of the net and you'll find these little shrimp flipping around.

<<< Team Grass!! (for shrimp)

I've heard of GLASS minnows, but not glass shrimp.

Hell, I used to catch grass shrimp in the canals in Metairie. You can catch them anywhere there's grass in fresh water, to my knowledge. Good SACALAIT bait.

Around Morgan City in the river, they would hang a leafy branch in the water. The grass shrimp would hide in them. You just lift slowly and put the net under the branch. Not sure what type of bush they used though

I used to find similar stuff in poorly sorted shrimp as bycatch. We called them squilla. Must be a similar species, never heard of them used as bait though.
